Numbness

Do any of your body parts go numb while riding? If so, what do you do about it?

tached1000rr 09-27-2009 08:52 PM

It does not happen too often but when it does I try to move around as much as possible, if alone I'll stop for a few minutes to stretch and walk around a bit. On longer rides I'll shake my throttle hand occasionally.

Trip 09-27-2009 08:58 PM

my feet/ankles would usually start hurting first on the sportbike. Since I got the GS, it's usually my ass. I need a stiffer seat.

ceo012384 09-27-2009 09:03 PM

After about 10 minutes on the track on my tard my hands would go numb from the thumping.... all they're really doing is whacking on the brakes or whacking the throttle wide open though so I guess I don't really need the feeling

Final answer I guess is, ignore it

I heard that eating Tums (calcium) will help with the hand numbness.

I don't have too much trouble with my hands. But my right ankle/foot goes numb. I think it is because my hip flexors/hip area in general are tight and doesn't allow proper circulation to my foot. The vibration from the exhaust probably doesn't help either.

Wow, tums, really? Might have to try that...

Hips/hip flexors are doing a lot of work especially in spirited riding... is there a chance that your jeans/pants/whatever are a little too tight for riding? Snugly fitting jeans that may look nice standing up can be a little too tight once you're straddling a bike

TYEster 09-27-2009 09:15 PM

My toes/feet go numb from the peg vibrations. However I think it's more soreness because I'm CONSTANTLY pivoting around on the balls of em, and the toes are after the "pressure point".

Haha, so far my remedy is doing the Rossi-Leg-Move... Which I've been called on several times, but it frees up my foot from the peg and allows blood flow back into it along with feeling. It also allows me to stretch my leg and hips since they're not usually used for riding in such a position at such momentous pace.

tached1000rr 09-27-2009 09:17 PM

Interesting that Tyester and Racedoll both ride Kawis and have numbness in their foot, could be a trait of the bike in terms of vibration/harmonics

Yep. A race friend told my hubby this since he has issues with his hand going to sleep (track and longer street rides).

No, jeans aren't too tight. I like them snug, but not tight. I run so I know it is from that and not enough stretching.

I seem to know my problem(s) and how to fix, but fail to do so.

Hmm could be, and that I'm just not "in tune".

Ah-ha I made a funny. :td: But to be honest, it happens when I ride the 750squidmobile too. I'm just 240lbs(in gear) up on my toes alot when it comes to riding around the track for the whole 30min session.

Particle Man 09-27-2009 09:45 PM

my right big toe and the ball of both feet.

lower pegs are on the way (Buell footpegs that will be modified to fit the SV).

Apparently, there's a nerve that is being pinched in my lower back by the position of my legs on the pegs.

the chi 09-27-2009 09:46 PM

My pinkie goes numb if I put too much pressure on my wrist and hands, or if my gloves arent "just so". From time to time my toes and the ball of my foot will on long rides and such...

To help with the issue I flex and move them if I can, or stop and take a break.

Seriously it could be since Erik's foot used to go to sleep too... well, that was on the 900 when he had a screaming exhaust that vibrated the crap out of everything! So I'm sure that didn't help the situation.

I find it interesting that you say this because when I rode hubby's bike home 05 zx10) from town (about 15 mins) I was miserable from the peg position. They are much farther down and forward than on my bike. I think I would be in worse condition on his bike for longer rides than I am on mine.

that's why I went with the Buell pegs instead of the SVN rearsets from the '03 SV... the SV rearsets move the foot position forward as well as down while the Buell pegs just drop the pegs down an inch with no forward change.

:)

I keep hearing good things about the buell pegs, need to see if I might could fab em up for my cbr and see if I like them. How much are the buell pegs?

RedRider2k2 09-27-2009 11:16 PM

The right half of my right pinkie finger. It's weird but I think it's my gloves that do it to me. I usually just readjust my glove and when it get bad I ride with an open palm on the throttle for a couple of minutes.

Antwanny 09-27-2009 11:43 PM

BUTT and some times my right leg

Fleck750 09-28-2009 12:59 AM

Hands use to go numb. Now that I haven't worked in a few months in a repetitive motion job, no more numbness. :)

Tmall 09-28-2009 07:50 AM

My hands used to, till I bought new gloves.

My upper back goes numb after a couple hours on the bike. The only thing that helps us stopping to take a break.

I've recently started taking advil as a preventitive and its working wonders for my riding pains.

that's what I wanted to do but apparently my "local" Buell dealer pulled the Buell franchise and only sells HD's now so I had to order them online. :(

Sure!

Part number is N0006.1AD (Fits '03-'07 XB9R and '04-later XB12R models. Stock on '03-later XB9S and '04-later XB12S models).

I don't have 'em yet (ordered) but once I get them I'll try to snap some pics.

I put those on my Firebolt. Helped a little.

Can I have your old gloves?

I haven't done the stranger in a while.

Tmall 09-28-2009 01:10 PM

You'd love em! They say buell on them. And the fingers are worn out on the throttle hand!

50 dollars shipped.

TYEster 09-28-2009 06:50 PM

How is that the Buell pegs help? They don't really look any different.

I've had things like my butt, hands etc go numb, but the worse was the end of my... cough... ya! I did take great advantage of this and beat it like a step child.

askmrjesus 09-28-2009 09:40 PM

I'm old and beat up.

I'm happy when things go numb, less pain that way.

What if you can't ignore it? Someone mentioned wrapping and ace bandage around the throttle but I don't think that worked since hubby removed it. We are taking a long trip in a couple weeks and I know he is going to have this trouble with his hands going to sleep.

RACER X 05-16-2010 11:19 PM

my thumb is okay now, nearly 1 yr later......lol

HokieDNA01 05-17-2010 03:35 AM

try gel inserts in your boots. Helps keep my feet from buzzing on the pegs. Gel grips also work. I try to remind my self to keep a light grip on the bars and if on the highway I often us a palm rocker to reduce hand fatigue.

Homeslice 05-17-2010 03:42 AM

Put the stock bar weights back on. Those bar end sliders increase vibration.

His bike is stock.

the chi 05-17-2010 09:11 AM

How much of his weight is resting on his wrists? That was my problem before I trained my body out of it. Now when I am getting tired or lazy I automatically check my forward weight and adjust it off and it helps tremendously.

Rider 05-17-2010 09:12 AM

My ass gets numb.

RACER X 05-17-2010 09:24 AM

try wearing bicycle shorts under your jeans

OneSickPsycho 05-17-2010 10:24 AM

My ass, just like everyone else's... the side of my hand and some of my fingers go numb sometimes. It's carpal tunnel from yearz of keyboard commando'ing.

Hard to say with him. I notice this with myself but I don't have the same problem as he does.

It does much more than that... I've coached a lot of riders to stop locking their 'bows and using their cores to support themselves... it can add serious miles to your distance capabilities.

For me it's about having my wrists in the same position for long periods... and the vibes don't help. Again, it could be carpal tunnel.

wildchild 05-19-2010 01:11 PM

my hands used to go numb on my Triumph. I would just start drumming my fingers on the levers to get some movement.

long trips my legs tend to cramp up a bit so on sport bikes I will "stand up" to stretch.

On the bike I have now, everything seems pretty good except the posterior. Haven't figured out what to do for that other than stop and walk around a little bit.

Gas Man 05-19-2010 10:12 PM

Wild... you simply need to use some hwy pegs and/or pass pegs if you don't have a passenger.

As a side note, I've found that standing up gets tail-gaters to back the hell off REALLY fast :lmao:
