The Hawk.
as promised, pictures of my new project beater. like i said shes a mess but we'll see how bad things are when i roll her into the garage tonight and start fiddling. cant wait to get this thing going, pretty sure if honda didnt change their ignition switches too much between 82 and 88 i ought to be able to hotwire it pretty easily. after that we'll see about spark and maybe a start :tremble: gotta take it completely apart anyway so its no big if it wont. anyway:

Might want to air up that front tire.
|
all dry rotted out. Needs new rubbers for sure. Gonna attempt an air up before we pull it out
|
I never knew they were a 45 degree twin.
Are you sure that is a hawk and not an eagle?;) |

sweet! now get to work...
|
Very cool.
I had a hawk track bike about 6 years ago and LOVED it. It's the main reason I have my SV. What are your plans? F3 front end? VFR rear wheel? Keep us updated :rockwoot: |
If you're keepin that front end, you might be wise to check that front rotor. from where I'm sitting it looks worn as hell. sweet bike though.

Nice. I can't wait to see your work in progress and the finished product.

ok first night in my garage and the ignition is defeated (mr dremel made short work out of that one.) it now operates with easy any key or screwdriver action. also pulled the rear fairing down far enough to defeat the cable that releases the seat, allowing me to hook my jump box to the battery and test all lights and circuits (passed) checked oil level and found it to be adequate as well as to be newer clear oil...good sign. flipped the safety switch off and thumbed the starter, turns over easy and the oil pressure lamp goes out. good shit. pulled the plugs and held them to the frame with the starter pressed and found good spark front and back. replaced the plugs and said fuck it. went for a start at full choke. not even a cough, not really surprised since it was last reg'ed in 02'. gotta pull and clean the carbs and put some good gas in her and im sure she'll fire right up. ;)

Keep us posted on this one.
I love the old Hawks. |
washed the gunk off of her and pulled the tank and airbox tonight. couldnt verify the operation of the fuel pump but im not too sure about the conditions required for one to fire up on the old carbed bikes. hell, when i had the cane' i didnt even realise it had one. at that point i was about ready to quit for the night but between the jersey redneck in me and the booze i decided to try and get it running by pouring a delicate mix of ten parts regular unleaded one part miller lite directly down the carb throat. and after countless backfires, and about 7 carb fires (blew em out), i got it to run for about two seconds. sounded great! then my beer bottle ran out of gas and she let off a backfire that probably had all the vatos across the street strapping up so i called it a night ;)

Epic thread bump. Just got an f2 tank off ebay for pretty cheap and have a title'd frame I can move everything to. I did get it running with video I need to post but discovered that the front header has an inch hole in it and is cracked all the way round. Now I gotta dig up money for a full system

My first foray into roadracing was at the hands of Honda Hawks. One was supersport andlightly prepped, the other full on superbike with 700 cc kit and F3 front end. Wonder how many racers busted ther cherries with these.

Both mine were equipped with Fox Shocks that I dont think are available any more. Had the VFR rear wheel on the superbike and entire F3 front end, which was resprung for the weight but otherwise stock internals. Worked fine. I am not certain what OEM shock would slot in but any of those would likely need a diff spring rate to work. I doubt if your girl is going to need that much suspension anyway right? LOL!

Made an offer on ebay for a two bros full system and mysteriously it said the offer was accepted right away. Paid. May call the company just to be sure they took it. Might be we got a good ass deal though
|
Monster seat and cowl? Mine had an RC 30 race seat and upper fairing. Least till it got started racing, then it was the race seat and a number plate up front after I split the upper in T6 at Oak Hill. I needa search and find some pics.

Found a listing on amazon from starcycle usa for a d&d full system for $460/$5 shipping. Scraped up the cash and remembering the ebay debacle emailed them to see if the "3 left" claim was accurate. Turns out it wasn't, out of production (already knew that) and none left. Got a nice little email thanking me for checking first and saying they'd pull the ad. So I'm back to hunting around and the wad is back in the drawer under my makarov. We'll see if it stays pipe money or turns into bike money or even guitar money
Don't know how starcycle is when they have your cash but they were pretty upfront and quick on my email |
I"m pretty sure M4 makes a full exhaust for the Hawk. I have a good friend's Hawk in my garage looking a lot like your first pics. She is beaten up but I'm sure will run again someday. I love the looks of the monster tail.

we've decided to hold off on the monster seat for now. planning to go ahead on the f2 tank though. torilynne is planning to put a chunk of her tax returns towards stuff this thing needs so i guess id better cough up some pipe money soon  anyway, pulled the fairing, front fender and the intended f2 tank for the long paint process. gonna be a rattlecan special. primer with a silver basecoat and duplicolor metalcast anodised blue. hopefully it wont look like ass :lmao: we'll see.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...324_215209.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...327_190829.jpg |
Primer phase complete on the fairing and front fender. Just need a light sanding and wash so we can move into the metallic basecoat.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...329_203426.jpg Started stripping the f2 tank. Holy bondo everywhere! It looks like its still good. Just going to be a bunch of work to prep it. Anyone ever do the por15 strip seal on a tank before? Might be worth my time to fix the original instead. Lol http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...329_201637.jpg |
Kudos on your shop help homie! How do you get anything done?
Anyhey, rattle can jobs can be good. It is all about prep and proper coating and finishing. You have to be wary when applying the spray due to inconsistent pressure. A little wet sanding and good clear coat and you have it made. Now spend some money on your girl's bike you cheap bastid! |
This is his Girls bike??

The Hawk will make an excellent trainer. Perfect thing to start her on before she trades up to a 696 Monster or SV650. Could be that she falls in love with it and wants to pimp it out instead. RC bodywork, rear wheel, and a F3 front end, trick paint and some carbon fiber...Hawks are immortal!

I'm looking forward to spending some time with a liquid cooled vtwin. My experience so far is limited to about five minutes on a superhawk (sports oriented twins anyway) and I've been considering a switch in that direction for a bit now |

It is a new design with my 1125 but it has a character alot like a Duc 900/1000 SS. Tractor like and lazy at most throttle settings. It does have a 2000 rpm top end that the SS doesnt have tho. A real last minute rush. But everywhere else it just pulls nice and tractable, like my Hawk and my SV before only stronger. |
