Went for a little slide on my back

This morning I went over a friends house to watch him start up his new (very used) bike for the first time. A late 70's CB750. Anyway after a few tries he got it fired up and took it out for a spin came back and I took it out for a spin. The back brakes weren't on the bike and there is a ton of other shit wrong with it, no lights, super stretched chain, a ton of general maintenance stuff that needs to be done.

Anyway I threw on my helmet and ran up the street and back down toward the dead end court he lives in. Get up to about 30 on my way back and go to slow down and grab a handful of brakes and. Nothing. The brake lever fell off in my hand. So I'm doing 30 on a bike with no brakes going into a cul desac.

A quick downshift to first maybe a second worth of engine braking then bam, hit the curb thrown off the bike slide for a second on my back and manage to make it back to my feet and run to a stop before the bike stopped sliding. I don't know how fast I was actually going when I hit the floor but it wasnt too fast because I landed flat on my back and sorta sprung back up to my feet. Not in any pain or anything and I dont think my head hit the floor.

No damage to the bike, not worse than it was already anyway. Well, it totally could have been worse.

Sorry you had it lay it down.

What, do you think I have all day to READ??!?!! It's all Words, with letters both vowels AND no numbers!!!

derf 01-18-2010 01:35 PM

Oh i knew the bike was a hit bike, the guy bought it for $100 and it took 2 months to get it running. the previous owner used it for parts and apparently one of the parts he used was the nut holding the brake lever on.

Well, now 2 hours after it happened my wrist is starting to get sore.

tached1000rr 01-18-2010 02:27 PM

Glad you decided to throw on a helmet, because for the type of ride you were taking a large percentage of folks out there would have not bothered to put a helmet on.

Hope you are okay, I doubt there was much of any, but any damage to the bike?

HurricaneHeather 01-18-2010 02:29 PM

Fred....wow.

Glad your ok! Even a short ride could have ya on your head, kudos for wearing you helmet!

derf 01-18-2010 03:53 PM

And to make matters worse, my battery is dead. i forgot to shut the key off last time I rode it, and didnt quite hook up the trickle charger until a week later. Rode saturday and the bike went fine, but needed a jump start first thing in the morning and at the gas stop. The battery showed 2.5 v before the ride, and 2.7 after :(

Avatard 01-18-2010 04:02 PM

Glad you're OK. Such is the risk of being a test pilot for "vintage" rides.

TYEster 01-18-2010 04:08 PM

*note to self*

Do not ride a $100 bike that's bigger than 50cc's.

Fleck750 01-18-2010 05:05 PM

Older bikes know who's worthy to ride them. You're not one of them. :bonk:

Glad you're OK

Meh, small bikes can bite ya real fast, and real hard too. I used to race euro pocketbikes. My experience is that smaller bikes can actually dole out a positively cruel amount of road rash, and with even greater immediacy.

Remember, you can balance a broom on your hand, but not a pencil. The longer lever "telegraphs" its motion more slowly, leaving time to react and counterblance. Small lever flops over so fast, you just eat it.

Yup can't bend down or twist my upper body. Anything faster than a slow deliberat move hurts my right side. Wrist is fine now. Its not broken or cracked, that hurts way worse, just painful.

I have until Saturday to feel good, got a big party to go to.

Havnt told the wifey why I hurt, she dont know about my lil mishap, I dont want to scare her away from the bike like I did a few years ago.

I was thinking you would know about those little bikes OSP ;) So how much are you still feeling from that one?

the chi 01-20-2010 03:19 PM

 Was alcohol involved?

Worst rash I ever witnessed was a buddy on a pocket bike in shorts, before his encounter, his words were "hold mah beer".

Actually, if anyone questioned my logic, you were my anecdotal proof. I already had that in mind...I remember your story well, and I felt your pain.
