Twisty Butt Association Ride

So I'm thinking of joining a riding buddy for the second annual Twisty Butt ride also known as the Arkansas All Day 500.

Its 500 miles of non-stop twisty Ozark mountain roads in 12 hours or less. I'm super excited and also kinda nervous about being able to finish in time. I have riden 550 miles in a day before but usually that involves super slabbin it there are back. My ass and thighs are sore just thinking about it.

I'm the first girl to ever register (not that this is that big of a ride) and almost everyone is usually on an FJR (the FJR Group started the ride). I'll be riding my GSXr. Could be interesting. :tremble:

tommymac 03-23-2010 04:18 PM

its doable. On a sport bike the twisties seem easier than straight slabbin it because youre moving around on the bike some and not just sitting droning straight ahead.

HokieDNA01 03-23-2010 04:21 PM

I know it's do-able. My only concern is that I usually start the day pretty fast then slow down after I eat or start to get tired (as most do). The guy I'm riding with is crazy fast. I just worry about holding him up...but I can bring a GPS if he needs to take off. There are picture check points along the way.

tached1000rr 03-23-2010 04:25 PM

sounds fun and I know you will do great, can't wait for you to report back afterwards.

HokieDNA01 03-23-2010 04:27 PM

I just can't wait to see what kind of damage these roads will do to my new set of tires. Lol! I have heard great things about the Ozarks

tommymac 03-23-2010 04:29 PM

what rubber are ya sportin

Particle Man 03-23-2010 04:29 PM

should be fun!

HokieDNA01 03-23-2010 04:32 PM

BT021's. Sport tourers. I was flat spotting the BT014s and now I'm doing the opposite to the BT021s. I just took my front off and I wore the sides down to the base rubber and still had plenty in the middle. I think I trail brake too much and wear my sides out.

That's what I did to get to the Rally. Yeah, my knees were sore when I got there. Much better than slabbing it back up though.

Cass 03-23-2010 05:42 PM

You're going to love it :D Though admittedly, I don't know how the roads are around your neck of the woods... but I've got family in southern Missouri, and have ridden NW Arkansas

dReWpY 03-23-2010 06:40 PM

I would call that a typical riding day when osp and myself lived closer

No Worries 03-24-2010 12:32 AM

I'm used to tossing a heavy bike like an FJR around corners. It's physically demanding as I lean way off the bike on each curve. You should have a much easier time on your Gixxer. For me, twisty roads are also a mental workout as I'm intensely focused on the next curve.

I'm also in pretty good shape, but I'm no spring chicken. I stop often to stretch, drink fluids, and pee. Are you taking a tank bag?

HokieDNA01 03-24-2010 02:20 AM

Its more of a mental workout for me then a physical one. If I'm in leathers, which I will be, my butt doesn't get too sore. I just start to mentally wear out towards the end of the day. I will have a tank bag and it will be full of 5 hour energy shots. The only thing that sucks about taking the Gix is that the gas milage and fuel capacity sucks. We will have to stop more often then the FJR crew.

The more frequent stops isnt necessarily a bad thing, gives you an extra opportunity to stretch out break up the ride and re focus.

agreed

Trip 03-24-2010 08:38 AM

I still don't know how Rick did 1000 miles of the dragon in 24 hours. Twisty long rides just wear you out mentally quick.

Did the IBA approve that run. I heard they were trying to discourage it from happening out of safety concerns.

no, he had to speed to do it in the 24 hour time. There was no way to do it legally, so it didn't count.

psychochild28 03-30-2010 01:06 AM

that sounds like a ton of fun! If you want a 6 pack of 5 hr energy shots let me know i can get them anytime I want for free.

HokieDNA01 03-30-2010 01:16 AM

That would be AWESOME Jenna. I drink them all the time!

t-homo 03-30-2010 03:18 AM

what is the route?

KSGregman 03-30-2010 09:48 AM

That sounds like epic fun! I'll be down to Rogers, AK in May....hitting up a rally there then back tracking to another rally in Grove, OK that same week-end....I'm sure we'll be all over in between...we're planning to be in that area 3 or 4 days depending on the weather.

I'm looking forward to hearing your report when you get back! (Some pics would be cool too if you find time to snap a few!)

HokieDNA01 03-30-2010 12:10 PM

I am looking into the route. They have a GPS download on the website but I dont have the GPS with me. I wish they would post a streets and trips map or something.

You prolly need them soon don't you? The ride's the 3rd right? Well I leave tomorrow for the weekend so I can get them to you tonight or tomorrow before I leave if you aren't busy when I head up that way.

ericr 03-31-2010 09:00 PM

Kathy I think you'll do fine and it should be a blast. One thing about getting tired though, the biggest thing that'll sap your energy and tire you mentally is dehydration. Drink plenty of water on the run and you'll do better.

For reals. I think we may have hit one or two of those roads during our cross-country trip...

Looks like fun. Might go try that on a much easier pace in the fall I have a place to stay right up there.

Good luck and hope those energy drinks help! Kick those guys butts!

Of coarse its fun. You weren't there! You can't stay there. They don't want you either. And YES the energy drinks will help. Help us deal with you running around spewing things from your mouth!

Goodbye!

HokieDNA01 04-03-2010 11:31 PM

OK Gas, this is my thread and I don't want that Drewpy/Psychochild drama in here. I just wanted to post about my ride. I have met psychochild before on a few rides and she has been nothing but nice to me. I haven't met drewpy but i'm sure I will eventually as he rides in the same group I do. I dont want to get involved in their past.

Jenna, thank you for the energy drinks. They were a big help.

I was able to complete 618miles of curves in 11 hours. I had a blast. Got a performance award from a trooper as well but sometimes you have to pay to play. Still feel great and place to ride a few hundred more tomorrow.

tached1000rr 04-03-2010 11:33 PM

sorry you got a ticket, how fast were you going and in what mph zone? or simply stated: What was your citation?

HokieDNA01 04-04-2010 12:14 AM

It was only 68 in a 55 so not bad at all. We were running 140mph on many straights so I feel lucky that it was a minor offence. I'll be calling the DA soon and asking for a "civil penalty". I heard you pay a little extra and no points. Sounds good to me. I had a clean driving record till now.

Yeh it works 99% of the time. Unless the judge or prosecutor has a tick up their ass that day. Always ask for the plea deal when you show up for court. Usually you will get a non moving violation, obstruction of traffic, failure to signal, and the one I really like, illegally exiting the roadway ($550, ask me how I know that price)

Tsunami 04-04-2010 12:54 AM

Hokie, do you ride straight for 11 hours and just stop for gas? or are there rest breaks? I don't even want to do that many miles in a car with a radio, pit stops and food, let alone hunched over a sportbike.

Yes and you could always make out double. With my last cage speeding ticket i was doing 14 over. I took the plea deal which dropped both points off of the ticket, and moved the ticket from 14mph to 4mph, as long as I paid the $130 plus court fees. Then I got to the judge, and told him what happened, and he drives that same stretch of highway trap every day. He dropped my fine from $130 to $20. :rockwoot:

it was a drive by I believe...

tickets suck FTL

Kerry_129 04-05-2010 07:36 AM

What a RIDE!

Hokie did great, and rode the wheels off that bike! We recovered from a 45 delay, and a 100 mile navigation error (both dumb mistakes on my part), and completed it with 7 minutes to spare! Then got it a little 230-mile ride Sunday with our new FJR buddies to cap it all off. :rockwoot:
If you've never ridden the Ozarks in the N Arkansas hill country, it's beautiful territory with many, many outstanding roads - highly recommended. Now if we can just keep these performance awards off our driving records....

KSGregman 04-05-2010 10:19 AM

Well done!! :dthumb:

I can't wait to get down there in May...I'm sure I'll eat another rear tire off my bike....my 109-R goes through rear tires anyway...but "fun" riding in the Ozarks speeds the process up A LOT.

i like the 74 in a 70... nonmoving violation and $100 fine when you got popped for 86 in a 70

psychochild28 04-05-2010 11:25 PM

Glad to hear the ride went well! Sorry about the ticket.

So all the mods to the bike before hand weren't an issue?

smileyman 04-05-2010 11:35 PM

Problem with organized events like this is everyone ioncluding the troopers knew it was happening, the time, the route, everything. The Ozarks are great as long as you don't attract attention. This thing was on like 5 forums, one guy even posted the route on his facebook page. The Troopers knew to trap it and wrote about 25 tickets...

HokieDNA01 04-05-2010 11:37 PM

Yeah..they won't be making that mistake next year. Private forum. The ticket will cost me about $150 with no points. I"m not going to complain

No points is the key.

smileyman 04-06-2010 10:00 AM

My Arkriders forum people and I ran 7,123, 16, 23, 112, all over and never ran into any troopers except in the town of Jasper itself. We saw county occaisionally but we owned it every weekend. Then all of a sudden you couldnt throw a rock without hitting a patrol car...Coincidence?? nah. We have to go underground baby!!

HokieDNA01 04-06-2010 10:56 AM

I think they will do that next year. out of 15 riders 8 got tickets and none of us were riding together so it wasn't like some big group bust. Sucked.

psychochild28 04-06-2010 11:02 AM

How long have they been doing the ride?

HokieDNA01 04-06-2010 11:03 AM

This is their second year. Last year they only had like 6 riders.

psychochild28 04-06-2010 11:06 AM

Might have 4 more riders if i can convince my roommate to go, cause her guy friend and one of his friends will go, and she lives along the route so free place to stay! :woot:

I'd like to go and make a weekend trip out of it in the fall with her but not sure she'll go for it.

smileyman 04-06-2010 11:06 AM

Maybe we should post the ride for the weekend after and PM all the entries the correct date?

Or announce a route in Okla and run it in AR, or post it for AR and run it in MO?

It is a GREAT route but very challenging and you really do have to be hauling to make the time limit. I won't say how fast we were moving on straights but fast enough that 68 in a 55 is getting off easy.

psychochild28 04-06-2010 11:23 AM

haha yea i bet.

That's why i wanna go when there's no time limit at least once first. But steph's guy friend would take her on the back so it would only be me they'd have to worry about making the time limit but it would still be fun.

the chi 04-06-2010 11:25 AM

Sounds like you had a great time, congrats on making it!
