Local rider died last night

One of the people I have ridden with in the past died in an accident last night. She was parked on the side of the road at a corner talking on her phone, and a school bus making a right hand turn knocked her over, pinned her under the bike and stopped on top of the bike with its rear wheels. She was on the phone with her kids at the time, and the bus was also full. The driver has been caharged with vehicluar manslaughter.

Not a good situation.

SFC Russel was also my BNCOC instructor

Ugh, hate to hear stories like this. Completely freak accident and we always have to watch out for other people not paying attention.

I thought the same thing...:(

Worse still if they had called her, causing her to pull over to talk...and all because of one moment's inattention by another.

So sad.

derf 04-21-2010 11:58 PM

My understanding was that the older son did hear it and was able to call for an ambulance I met the guy once, he is in his early 20's, so its not a child that will grow up thinking he killed mom.

I don't know the whole story yet either, I expect details to come out as the week rolls on.

The thing that really stands out in my mind is that the bus driver was charged. If it was a simple accident then there shouldn't be any charges, but if the guy was drinking or actually negligent in some way then yes.

tommymac 04-22-2010 04:34 AM

maybe the driver was on the phone or something like that, guess we will have ot wait and see. I needed to pull over on the bike the other day and was making an extra effort to find a spot away from the traffic just to avoid this sort of thing. :(

Full Throttle 04-22-2010 07:44 AM

Im sry to hear that. That really is a sad thing.
But that is the reason i use Bluetooth i never have to stop riding.

Cutty72 04-22-2010 08:21 AM

I'm thinking that if you are a bus driver, and you run over and stop on top of a motorcycle, and don't really notice... yeah, there is a problem there and charges need to be filed.

RIP rider and soldier.

well, i guess it's somewhat of a relief that her children aren't small. but still, what a tragic loss.

ontwo 04-22-2010 09:37 AM

How the hell does that happen?????????
RIP

z06boy 04-22-2010 09:38 AM

Geez just read this...how sad and what a freaky thing to happen.

Tough for the riders friends and family as well as the bus driver and all of the kids on the bus too.

From what I understand the driver's reaction was to stop after realizing what happened. With a bus it's probably hard to tell when you've already ran over someone or are still in the process of doing so.. or maybe they wanted to try to prevent anymore damage.. could be anything along those lines.

Archren 04-22-2010 01:23 PM

Oh my God. :( My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, and to you as well, Fred. RIP...

Particle Man 04-22-2010 01:35 PM

OMG, that's horrible :( :( :( :(

azoomm 04-22-2010 04:40 PM

How horrible!! :( RIP I hope they figure out exactly what happened. Charges for the driver that killed her are a good thing... well, usually drivers that hit/kill motorcyclists aren't charged.

Right, because riding and talking on the phone are just that much better?

I don't actually have an answer for this, only a question:

Who do you trust more? Yourself, with the added distraction of the phone, or the unknown person that just may or may not see you, and perhaps run you over with a bus, had you instead pulled over?

My condolences and best thoughts go to the family

fnfalman 04-28-2010 10:57 AM

That's one fucked up incident. If I were her son, I'd probably contemplate murder.

A few years back, one of the guys that I know had pulled off onto a shoulder to adjust his tank bag and a vehicle somehow sideswiped him and killed him. The bastard didn't even stop. However, karma was a mutha. The Cali CHP somehow tracked down and nailed that SUV.

Cass 04-28-2010 11:33 AM

Holy hell :( :( May she rest in peace.

Something's seriously wrong with that bus driver... at least from what has been presented here.
