sportbikers crash alot
CA and FLA are the highest # of biker deaths, TX #3
"In 2008, the under age 20 age group had the largest increase in motorcycle fatalities (up 57% from 13 in 2007 to 30 in 2008 with the second highest increase seen in the over age 59 age group which increased 44% percent from 32 in 2007 to 57 in 2008.** " "Super sport motorcycles, defined as consumer versions of the motorcycles used by factory racing teams, account for 14% of the registered motorcycles in California, yet the 211 super sport drivers and passengers killed in 2008 accounted for 38% of the 560 motorcyclists killed in California. ** Between 2002-08, 44% of Super Sport motorcycles that were fatally crashed were less than a year old, compared to 37% Other Sport, 28% Cruiser, and, 34% Touring motorcycles. ** Between 2002-08, 44% of Super Sport riders killed were not properly licensed, compared to 32% Other Sport, 24% Cruisers and 19% Touring motorcycles. ** Between 2002-08, 86% of Super Sport motorcycle fatal crashes were “speed related”, compared to 57% Other Sport, 40% Cruisers, and 39% Touring motorcycles ** Between 2002-08, 66% of Super Sport motorcycle operators killed were between age 21-34.** " http://www.startriding.com/?p=522 |
Most people kille dbetween age 21 and 34 is a result of trauma anyway so those stats arent much of a reach anyway, and seems like theyre stating the obvious anyway.

And, uh, duh that sportbikes are in the higher % - what 21 year old can afford a brand new freakin' Harley (or would want to when they can get a brand new sportbike for a fraction of the cost)? I'd wager that if Harley's were cheaper you'd see just as many crashes in that age band with Harleys. Kids like to go fast - that ain't rocket science. |
I blame the MSF.

have you seen the prices of bikes lately, 600SS are topping $10k |

How many of you with sport bikes for sale have dealt with young and/or unlicensed first-time riders looking to buy your slightly used 130hp superbike; no training, no MSF, no experience; just looking to buy the fastest bike they can afford and GO? I visit a lot of bike shops, and everyone has brand-new sportbikes with almost 0 miles on them sitting in the service dept that were crashed by new riders who hadn't made it a mile before crashing.... I know there is a certain contingent that advocate that a full-on sportbike is a good first bike.... ....looks like not so much, on the whole.....:wtfru: |

Some of us were those guys at one point too. Another thing to add is how fast things have advanced with technology on these bikes and how you can get yourself in more trouble now than on a 600 from the 90's. I am fine with those kids crashing those bikes too since it makes more cheaper track bikes available ;) |

The most surprising number is how many aren't licensed. I mean really, how hard is it to take the MSF or a DMV riding test? These dudes are either lazy, cheap, or impatient. Well scratch cheap, cuz they go out and buy a $600 exhaust, lol.

Lets see..
Most of em young? A lot of em unlicensed? A lot of em just about year on the road/ Yup Sportbikes are to blame. |

Tiered licensing FTW, with proper guidance and oversight...
A little 'sperience goes a long way... |

CA has the highest ratio of riders to car drivers, so that is not a surprise that we have the highest # of deaths.

My personal deuschebagging era was in the 92-95 time frame. Wasn't a parker or a cruiser. Just your average shitbox driver looking for drivers of other shitboxes to race. After the SCPD started cracking down in 95 I stopped going there. Anytime after that it was just outta of convenience to get to and from the south and north shore if it made sense to use DPA. Friends of ours used to live in Deer Park and and a lot has changed. I do see that the "Bro patrols" still make stopping at that 7-11's an uncorfortable experience. |

Annoying stop and go traffic...check Cruiser "Loud pipes save lives...especially at every red light or stop sign" crowd....check "Where you going where you been I heard you speeding (in bumper to bumper traffic license registration...get outta here" Repeat 5 times.....check Waiting 2 hours for Meh food compared to the bazillion other restaurants around LI where you can just show up and get seated without having to shout or squeeze through a packed restaurant....check. but hey...you can look at other people's boats from a safe respectable distance. |

Sure, since racetrack conditions would make it pretty tiring to use only 2 fingers for the whole race.
But for the street, what's the point? |

Why does he do it then? IMO, leaving 1-2 fingers on the bar helps give you more feel & control. Of course, Rossi wins races and I don't, so

I think for most people who ride sport bikes and aren't trying to go from 180mph to 80mph, the brakes on our bikes are extremely strong and 4 fingers aren't necesarry. But whatever works for someone is always the best. |
I use one finber, then two, by that point she is usually ready to rock so I go for broke...
