Gas Man and marko pillage the East (MASSIVE pics)
Anyone who reads this forum knows Gas Man came out to PA last weekend. We covered 500 miles, rode through 4 states, ate 2 different cheesesteaks, demo'd Victory motorcycles, hit a massive rally, and ate way too much food.
On with the pics. Friday: Gas Man arrives. 2 push-rod twins ready to do business. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG00059.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG00060.jpg Saturday: We hit the local Victory dealer to do a demo ride. We were on a tight schedule all weekend so we had to get there early to get on the first ride. We both wanted to ride the Cross Country (the Street Glide clone) but they were both spoken for. So Gas rode the Vision and I rode the Cross Road (Road King clone) http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG00063.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG00064.jpg The Cross Roads was nice. But not totally refined. It was loud mechanically. Gas says it was the straight cut gears making that racket. But extremely comfortable. This was the first touring bike I've ever rode. Felt like I could go all fucking day on this beast. Relatively easy to maneuver at parking lot speeds. Gas and I switched bikes for the 10 minute ride back to my house. The Ultra is heavy. No joke. But once you get it rolling its super easy to ride. And oh man, is it comfortable. Much like the Buell there's just so much torque down low, which the Victory lacked. Gas Man proceeded to wheelie my Buell as we approached a stop sign a block from my driveway. I was watching him in the mirror of his bike and BOOM...up comes my front wheel. I started laughing out loud and so did he. I could tell he was having a good time on the torque monster XB. He claims me telling him the front wheel comes up easy was more like an invitation than a warning. No harm, no foul. He's only the 3rd person other than me to ride my bike. From there we went south to Hanover to meet up with OTB. Long story short, OTB got caught in some wicked traffic and we never met up with him. So we headed south to MD. Rode 77 through Thurmont near Camp David. Gas has some good pics from that ride that my wife took from the back of his bike. Then we rode back to PA through 4 state parks and 1 big ass state forest. Good roads. Not a totally shitty ride. 200 miles. Sunday: Up early again. Heading east to Ephrata for a once a month massive rally. Hundreds and hundreds of bikes show up for this thing. Gas HD, my buddy's FZ1, and my Buell: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0536.jpg This is left field of a baseball field: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0537.jpg First Buell sighting: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0538.jpg A couple Prillers: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0540.jpg 2nd Buell sighting...a CR with a bad ass looking exhaust. We met at 9th and Passyunk...an hour late: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0566.jpg Thats the intersection with the world famous Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks. My wife's cousin was there, Phenix Rider was waiting for us since noon. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG00065.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0561.jpg We hit Pat's first, since everyone says they are the best: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0559.jpg The mushroom steak with provolone wit out: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0563.jpg Good but not as good as it's made out to be. Then the rest of the crew rolled up. Derf, Dave, his old lady. After eating that steak we walked across the street, where only Gas Man and I were man enough to eat another steak. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0558.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0562.jpg From there we wanted to be the rain home, but Gas needed his NJ sticker so we rolled out. Notice Derf running to assult my bike: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0565.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0564.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/DSCN0567.jpg Finally we stop for fuel. Everyone peeled off but Phenix: http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG00066.jpg Quote:

Cheese Steak Run
3 days
8 state parks 2 state forests 6 states 1 victory demo ride So Friday I run out to my good bud Mark's house. Arriving at his house in Harrisburg, PA we get a pic of two sexy push rod twins. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...n/IMG00060.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...n/IMG00059.jpg Saturday we start out with a ride up to the Victory dealer which has the corperate truck there for demo rides. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX003.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX002.jpg Even though we both wanted to test ride the Cross Country (Street Glide look alike), we had to settle for something else. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX013.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX014.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX012.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX020.jpg The victory vision 8ball, was my test ride. First I notice the 8" deep dish seat. The huge mirrors off in the distance grab ur eyes. You reach for the long pull back handle bars and you have a startling realization, half of those big mirrors shows all your knuckles. Yikes! http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX006.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX011.jpg Turn the key, thumb the starter and the 106 CI comes to life with very little enthusiasm or sound. It's what you can expect from a non push rod motor. But let's take it for a whirl. The throttle and brakes are crisp and responsive. But within only a few miles you notice the trans. Victory saw fit to pack all 6 speeds with noisey straight cut gears. So during the entire ride I had to listen to this trans. There was a saving grace to all of this. Motorvasion Victory provided us with what is the best test ride route I've ever been on. Thru the mountains, twisting our way thru this 20 min adventure. During which I have been trying to figure out the workings of this bike. My first confused point is this power windshield button. I cannot get this windshield to move. More on that later... I love the big gear indicator located in the LCD. The deep seat is comfy and even while the trans is noisy its also consistent. The bike also seems to be very well balanced. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX019.jpg The 106CI motor does the job but with no excitement. Further, the lack of push rods gives exactly what I was expecting. Pure lack of bottom end torque, disappointing for this large displacement motor. In the final miles we are out of the mountains and have a few traffic lights to navigate. I figured out that the blinkers are a 10 second blinker unless you have the clutch in (bike in gear) or in neutral. Under those 2 circumstances it will blink forever. Otherwise 10 seconds later regardless if you have turned or not; the blinker turns off. Good, bad, or indifferent? I do however, dislike the single staulk metric style blinker button. At a light, not even neutral will get this windshield to move with this button. After we arrive at the dealer, I ask a sales lady about it. Nothing. Finally she asks a mechanic and he informs me that this windshield button doesn't work. The 8ball version doesn't have the power windshield but they leave only use the one style controls. Seriously? I then point out to the mechanic that it has a manual adjustment. Plus he confirms my analysis that the trans is packed full of straight cut gears. He tells me its to be strong and last a lifetime, which like charlie browns teacher all I hear is I'm going to have to hear this for a lifetime of ownership had I owned this bike. Why o why! Hey, as a consultation they give you a MP3 plug in between you and the bars, under the left side fairing compartment. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX018.jpg My bud, Mark, road the Cross Roads. He said, while this is the first cruiser he ever rode, he said it was the most comfortable bike he's sat on. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX008.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX009.jpg This had standard bike amenities and I stand on my believe this is a want to be Road King. Right up to the standard equipment you see from the saddle. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX021.jpg We also notice that the saddle bags on the vision are useless with the side filling. Can a guy get a cargo net? http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX016.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX017.jpg The new cross roads and country aren't affected by this handicap. Maybe they'll adapt these to the vision. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX022.jpg Neither is the cross country http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX015.jpg I still like victories and while they're looks are weird they make a decent bike. The demo ride is done and while I would have loved to ride and chat more. We have other adventures to start. |
My buddy and I head out now with his wife now in tow on my back seat. We headed to the first state park, codorus park, to meet another buddy but he got caught up and couldn't make it out. So Mark checks the map...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX026.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX036.jpg Havin fun with my camera http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX031.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX032.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX034.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX035.jpg We head south, but first we must unload the guns. Rumor has it, MD won't re-act to kindly to how we roll. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX047.jpg crossing the mason dixon line and entering Maryland. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX039.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX040.jpg We then travel thru some great roads and the mid 80 degree temps made for a hot n sticky that I'm just not use to yet on May 1st. Cachuchin state park gave us a winding road along lakes, and creeks. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX041.jpg Mark approves of his road wonder findings... http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX037.jpg After we head back north we enter pa again and while running up 233 ran us thru 6 state parks and some amazing road twists. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX042.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX043.jpg It was an amazing day of roads that we found ourselves trekking. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX038.jpg I give it to Mark. For only being in these areas once before, he took me on roads that I could only dream to find in Michigan. End of Saturday... 200 miles. Sunday we roll out to Epheta for their first sunday of the month bike gathering at the American Legion. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...n/DSCN0536.jpg When I say there were bikes... there were tons! http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...n/DSCN0537.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...n/DSCN0549.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX069.jpg See the thread http://www.twowheelfix.com/showthread.php?t=14575 |
So then we had to hit the pavement running. We are late for our meet in Philly. With our trek thru our nations first state, Delaware, we had a hard and fast run to make.
We finally end up at the whole original reason for this weekend ride... http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...n/DSCN0566.jpg That's right. The 2 most famous debated cheesesteaks http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX089.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX097.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX098.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX095.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX101.jpg Our crew started to line up. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX090.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX091.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX102.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX107.jpg Mark and his beautiful wife http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX094.jpg Sunday afternoon... a line? seroiusly! Pat's up first http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX099.jpg The steak was bland, but the grease from it thinned out the whiz, cooked onions and mushrooms... it is good. $9 + drink http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX104.jpg In the mean time this tool backs their POS ice cream truck in, trying to score on this hot day. People aren't here for ice cream, GET LOST! http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX105.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX106.jpg Round 2.... Geno's http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX109.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX110.jpg $8.50 and it's definitely less to it. The roll is much softer which is at first awesome but then you realize you have to tear it. But there was less steak, and the onions weren't even completely cooked. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX113.jpg The debate ended poorly. I wasn't in love with either. Had it not been for the fabulous roads we discovered and the good company. This would have been a total loss for adventure status. |
We load up and throw the kickstands up for the last cool piece before my run home.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX114.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX115.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX116.jpg http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX117.jpg We run over to Jersey and I discover its nothing more than Michigan on the east coast with way more foreign cars. The roads are crap, it stinks, the houses and businesses are placed similarly. Plus a-hole drivers I'm use to. After getting to the PA turnpike we have lost everybody but our buddy James. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...n/IMG00066.jpg We then loose him as well as he heads home. There was a huge possibility that we were going to hit some seroius storms on the way home. But other than a wet shoulder on the turnpike it was clear sailing. We even switched rides cause the Buell was beating up on Mark with 225 miles under his belt today. I didn't mind, I enjoyed the switch and enlighting of Mark on the HD Ultra meathods. The Buell is a real nice bike. The power of torque was great and seemed to be so solid. What a perfect end to a great day of riding. We arrive back at his house, not 10 mins later it starts to pour. WOW! So I'm able to put in some of the smallest state stickers of the bunch. Doesn't really show the efforts we put forth but nevertheless, more filled in color. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l3...eese2KX119.jpg I made my adventure home and my luck ran out with rain dodging. About an hour into it, when in the thick of the mountains heading north, go figure. It dried up shortly after I got on I-80W. The rest of the ride was sunny and nice. Another 500 miles... Totally nearly exactly 1500 miles in the 4 days. My hats off to Mark. My many thanks for everybody else meeting up with us in Philly. Enjoy! |
Good story. Good pics. What other forum did you post that on?

I drove by the Victory dealer today and they were having a ride day, so I pulled up on the bus. Everyone just stared at me like I was dancing on the head of a russian bear riding a unicycle.
I checked out the bikes, and thought the styling was bland, but the paint was beautiful on every Victory they had there. After 5 minutes of wandering around the bikes and shop, I got back on the bus and rode off. Nobody spoke to me once. |

Gas, I like your write up on the Vision. I don't me to be argumenitive just some point of data. The Trannie gears are not square cut. The first 3 years they were but the most recent Trannies aren't. What you do have is classic sportbike transmission that has been up scaled and there is no doubt you hear it (No lifter noise to hide it? :)) As far as Torque goes you are absolutely right. When Victory first introduced the Hammer Engine 1999-2001 (not the Hammer Model) 92 CI It produced exceptional Low end Torque. It did however have straight cut gears in the transmission. (also 1999-2000 had a History of of 2nd gear failure) 2002 they produce the the 92 CI "Freedom" Motor with a smoother transmission bevel cut gears. But drop compression down to 9 to 1 Also this is the first engine that a Big Bore Kit is available for bumps displacement up to 100 CI.
2005 they introduce the Hammer Model this is a Stock 100 CI. This is also the year that SS announces they will produce a 106 CI kit. By 2008 the 106 is the standard engine. But in order to warranty the engine they have neutered the 9 to 1 compression and valve sizes that were developed to feed the 92 CI engines limit it. SS makes a replacement head with Larger intake and Exhaust Valves if you want to drop the coin and frankly if I were going to do another Victory I would or I would have Lloyd Greer Do what he did for mine and ope the Intake and exhaust Valves. Also if you are going into a Victory engine you owe yourself a set of of 10.5 to 1 J&E Pistons. While I will never convince anyone I still believe Pushrods belong on tractors no motorcycles , but then again all my HD Buddies tell me real motorcycles don't have radiators. |
Quote:
The Victories are nice bikes, but my point and I believe Gas Man's point, is you should have to have all those mods and money dumped into the bike to make it worth riding. The valves, the higher comp pistons. Who wants to do that? Not me. As for the pushrods, Corvettes, Mustangs, etc all had pushrods and made and make plenty of power. |
Thanks Marko. I actually asked him if they were heely (SP?) cut or straight. At any rate they were loud as F. Being directly under you, no exhaust will even cover up that noise.
And Yes Marko. I'm with ya. Say what you want about pushrods as non-believers. My 96" has way more power than that 106". My bike is basically stock. I have done no performence mods. not even my slip ons. Don't believe me. Marko rode each bike only once. Everything felt more refined and solid on my HD. However, I still think the Victory felt better than most metric cruisers I have rode. |

A Place to check would be Lloydz Motorworkz at www.quickvic-usa.com Lloyd Greer is the probably the best non factory Vic wrench in the US he also wrenches HD's As far perceived power that is relative, and there is no doubt that the HD makes its power down lower than the Victory. The Vic like The point of the mods is that you can achieve the same low end torque as t the Pushrods motors, if you choose. I agree if were financing a bike I wouldn't pull it apart. (when it comes to Bikes, I believe SS stands for stock sucks and nothing I own is stock.) Lest anyone think I am bashing HDs I am not, I just instinctively root for the Underdog, Again I feel a little foolish defending Victory while mine is for sale. My Bias will always be away from pushrod engines |
Yep, as I said, I don't know how the trans gears are cut but they are loud as F. Any adjustment to the throttle brings on the noise. Mechanic/salesman whatever wrong or not, doesn't change the noise level.
I still root for them, cause they are American made. But I don't see em overcoming the HD craze. I still think HD is more for your buck. And they are priced about the same when you compare apples to apples. I've done a few of the vic builds on their site... and poof... same if not more $$ |
