GP85 race w/SEMRA at CMP

Thought I would just post this up for you all to enjoy. My son is riding a 150r now so it's just me holding the 2-stroke flag for the family. SEMRA went to the all new kart track at CMP this past weekend and man, it's friggin' awesome! This is the only "mini" race that's given me a small feeling of being back on a big bike. The track is ultra fast for minis, perfect surface, GREAT run off...it's hard to ask for a better mini track.

This race had just about everything a racer could experience which is why I love it so much. Hope you enjoy. :D

BTW, if anyone is interested in mini racing...the bike that was used to dominate that race (ridden by Carlo Gagliardo) is for sale. I wanted him to ride it so everyone could see it's a dang good bike...and he proved it. :)

intense, where did you finish? Looks like you were in 2nd for awhile after one of the leaders ran wide and dropped to 3rd after your fall.

I rather fiddy racing though, because it doesn't feel like a big bike.

cool

Clay 08-17-2010 11:50 AM

I got 3rd. You could hear my friend Trevor on my tail the whole time. He could just barely pull me on his 180 (air cooled 4-stroke, 50 chassy) but not enough to take me...which is why I was trying to late brake as much as possible into turn 1. I had resigned myself to 4th until the rain started pouring. That's when Palmer (cobra 65) backed way down and let me ease on past. :D Palmer and myself are going at it for the championship, so I'm always happy to finish in front of the little guy. LOL

Troy...you wantin' an 85? ;)

CasterTroy 08-17-2010 12:01 PM

Well since I let the cat outta the bag :skep: I gotta go with SOMETHING I can run out there :rockwoot:

That or start a new username and rescheme the tard :wtfru:

From what it sounded like, you already had something else in mind. If you're interested, I'll be selling this thing for next to nothing compared to what other bikes with the same upgrades are going for! Email me if you're interested and I'll give you the whole low down.

Very cool! Nice vid. You guys are movin! I could hear your buddy the whole time up until the slide, musta been a good race. Love the sumo-action thrown in when you went through the grass :P

I've had a few tastes of mini racing... loved every second of it... Stock crf50... both wheels slidin everywhere, constantly saving lowsides on a knee... Wish I had the cash to do both mini & full size.

Q - Do you always use the clutch to up shift? Why not clutchless?

Clay 08-23-2010 05:26 AM

Thanks, it's definitely a lot of fun. :)

Yeah, after I went down I started making mistakes and just wanted to finish the race. Luckily the rains came and let me catch that little guy on bike 34. He's my main competition in the championship race. LOL

I do sometimes go no clutch on upshift and downshift. I try to still use the clutch though just to keep my "big bike senses". I don't want to develop a bad habit that I'll have to break when I go back to the big track.

OreoGaborio 08-23-2010 06:45 AM

Well that begs the question, why use the clutch to upshift on big bikes? Clutching IS the bad habit you should be breaking ;)

Just pre-load the shifter, roll off the gas to unload the transmission & get right back on it. It's quicker, more efficient and arguably less wear & tear on the bike.

CasterTroy 08-23-2010 08:02 AM

:lol

Clay know's what he's doing ;)

'Eh, I've seen what hard up/down shifts does to engagement dogs and shift forks. I'd rather replace or file down a clutch basket vs replacing gears and shift forks. I'm not on a factory bike with unlimited resources so I'll take those few tenths of a second per lap penalty. ;)

The only time I've ever gone all clutchless up and downshifts is when I'm in a do or die battle! That was a fun race and I was pushing it, but the guys in front of me (Carlo and Walter..the one who crashed) were gone so I just needed to keep the others behind me. I've been in one race this year where I threw it all to the wind and rode with everything I had. I won the race and had a friend on a 150r on my rear tire the whole race. THAT was a fun race. :D

Sorry guys.... not tryin to insult anyone's riding skill or intelligence, just tryin to post some minor constructive criticism. I have a habit of trying to help people with their riding as it's something that I get paid to do on a regular basis.

Clay, this will make very little difference so I don't think we need to get too into it... but when done right (not hard), clutchless upshifting does not cause ANY accelerated wear on the transmission (certainly not the gears themselves as it's a constant mesh transmission and the gears are constantly engaged). By rolling off the throttle (or using a quickshifter device) you release the tension inside the transmission and it will click into the next gear with no added stress on the internals. And with as many upshifts as you were making in that video that's a lot of added heat on the clutch plates.

People have been doing this with constant mesh transmissions forever and it is rarely ever the cause of any issues. In fact it's even a technique that I often teach to new track riders. It's one of the many advantages of a constant mesh transmission. Why not take advantage of it?

EDIT: Anyway, this thread is about your vid. Thanks for posting, it was fun to watch. :)

Clay 08-24-2010 04:18 AM

LOL, it's all good. Everyone has their method. :)

shmike 08-24-2010 09:06 AM

Great race, Clay!

Is Walter from Miami?

If so, he is the guy that runs our local mini track. I need to get back out there.

Clay 08-24-2010 09:55 AM

He sure is. Fast as heck. Of course, we called him the body surfer. I think he crashed 3x in that race alone. LOL
