R6s?

I know it's an old design, but if you could get one for a good price -new- would it be a good bike?

:idk:

neebelung 06-05-2008 11:01 AM

It's not an odd design at all -- it's the '02-'04 (I think those are the years) R6. It was a great bike, so rather than retiring it when they redesigned the R6, they made it the R6S.

Seriously a great bike (it's actually on my short list for when I upgrade). Not quite as screamin fast as the new R6, but also not as extreme of a riding position - it's a bit more comfortable. Where the R6 is a kick-ass track machine, the R6S would make a great daily rider, IMO.

z06boy 06-05-2008 11:05 AM

yes and what she said

Phenix_Rider 06-05-2008 12:22 PM

I read an article (in Cycle World maybe?) that compared the new R6 to the old (R6S). They liked the older one better, saying that the new needed a sprocket change to bring the power to streetable RPMs, and a set of heibiars to make it more comfortable.

fpzx10 06-05-2008 02:06 PM

You will like a GSXR 750 much better

Seriously, R6S would be a good ride

That may be the one from sport rider where they compared a new r6 vs an r6s and an 03 gsxr 1000 vs a 06 gsxr 1000.

Mr Lefty 06-05-2008 04:12 PM

shit I have the "old" Zx6r from 02... now called the ZZR600... I love my bike... only drawback is it's carbed... but even that isn't a huge deal as the carbs are awesome. the nice thing is it's not classified as a SS anymore with some insurance companies...

the R6S would be a excelent bike... talk to DLit... he had one (when it was an R6) with like 30K on it

DLIT 06-05-2008 05:07 PM

It's still a solid street and track bike, but they kept the design going because the R6 is geared for the track and experienced riders. So the R6S is there for the street with its more comfortable riding position. I had one when it was a R6 back in '04 to Jun '06. I put 19.5k miles onit in that time. Towards the end I started getting serious about getting faster and I traded it for a new R6. Not a bigger bike, but a better one. Where the new R6 is more of a track beast, it is still plenty good on the street just like the R6S is more for street but doubles as a very capable track bike also. I know a guy who runs 1:23's on his '04 R6 while I'm running 1:26's. It all comes down to experience because almost nobody will ride to the full potential of either R6.

To answer your would it be a good bike question, yes. It would be an awesome bike.

They basically were trying to see if the old bikes could be modded to run with the new ones. I was off on the years, it was an 01 vs an 07 (im looking at the article now) and performance wise the 07 still beat up the 01. 9.7 @ 149 vs 10.1 @ 141. The modded r6s (aka 03 r6) was a tiny bit quicker than the stock 07 r6.

serp16 06-06-2008 07:51 AM

I really like the look of the R6s, but at the same time it pains me to buy this older model bike when I can buy one of the newer models at nearly the same price. There is a dealer near here that is advertising 08 CBRs for $7900. I know they're all nearly equal in performance (at least as far as an non MotoGP rider like me is concerned).... decisions, decisions. Thanks for the input guys.

Don't think of it as an "older" bike. Think of it as a bike that was so GOOD that when they had to redesign it, it was too good to just kick it out of the lineup, so they gave it a new name and kept it around. If it wasn't a solid bike, they wouldn't have done that.

:)

overall I think they liked the 01 better as an all around bike, as for the GSX-R's anyway.

if my memory serves me correctly

DLIT 06-06-2008 12:29 PM

The R6S is a solid fucking bike. The R6 is for more experienced riders that know how to ride high in the RPM because that's where it lives. The 600RR is a good choice, too.

MEDIC 06-07-2008 12:49 AM

what everyone has postet it solid info ..
I've had the '06 and have the '08 R6 and it's def not a commuting bike and from what I have gathered from EVERYONE the R6S is a GREAT everyday bike

DLIT 06-07-2008 03:35 AM

I'd communte the shit out of my '06. I did 678 miles on it in one day before and I was good to go still. 12 hours.

Depends on your commute... slabbin' it probably wouldn't be bad, but it would suck for stop and go... at least, I'd imagine it would...

I'd rather do stop and go myself. You get to move around more.

It's not an old design. They updated the S version in 06 to have inverted forks. It's a great fucking bike.

If you're not going to track the shit out of it you don't need the real R6.

Mr Lefty 06-07-2008 09:54 PM

no shit? went back to inverted forks? that was the only "OLD TECH" about that bike really... the non inverted forks

DLIT 06-07-2008 11:57 PM

The '09 R6S, and the other S years have always had conventional forks, they're still non-inverted.

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/pr...00/0/home.aspx

And another thing is that it comes with a 120/60 front, not a 120/70 like all the other bikes out now. It literally is the same exact bike as the '04 but with different paint schemes every new year it comes out. Literally, down to the weight and everything.

Mr Lefty 06-08-2008 12:06 AM

I thought your old one had inverted forks... :idk:

eitherway... fuck'n bad ass bike... still one of my favorite bike designs

Maybe. Now I'm getting confused. Fuck that bike, new r6 FTW!

Mr Lefty 06-08-2008 12:17 AM

the only year they offered the inverted forks was 05... 06 it went to the new body... and the R6s went back to the non-inverted forks... where apparently.... it stayed

Seriously. Thing's such a screamer. No feeling like ripping through those gears on a straight. Sounds so fucking sick.

My buddy just track-prepped the SHIT out of his bike... has a leo vince full system. You could hear that thing from the garage no matter what part of the track he was on. Absolutely WAILED.

Here it is:

Mr Lefty 06-08-2008 12:36 AM

gorgeous

ceo012384 06-08-2008 12:41 AM

This is off the top of my head:

Revalved and resprung fork internals. Not sure if he did cartridges or not.
Elka triple clicker rear shock.
Armor bodies track skins.
Hyper pro rsc damper
SS brake lines.
Traxxion tank sliders
Stompgrip
Woodcraft rearsets
Woodcraft case covers
Woodcraft frame sliders
Woodcraft clipons & renthal grips
RapidBike fuel mgmt system with quickshifter and 2 selectable maps
Leo vince corsa full Ti system
Vortex sprockets -1 +3 (that was a good guess I made in the other thread about good track gearing )

Probably a couple other things...

DLIT 06-08-2008 12:48 AM

I spy a quick shifter. Sick bike. Tell him to let me ride it when I come home.

Yeah he said that rapidbike unit comes iwth the map selector and the quickshifter... they're not options, the automatically come with it.

Not sure how it's priced compared to the PCIII... but I know with the PCIII to use their quickshifter I think you also have to buy their ignition module... and that shit is mad $$$ when you add all three of them up...

I guess rain tires really ARE that much of a difference. One of the dudes at the TD was the dude above and that bike. He was fuckin' flying.

It's proly one of those things where you have to try it to tell the difference, just like getting your suspension tuned for the first time. You thought it was good, but you didn't realize how bad it was until it actually gets tuned.
