Holy insurance hell batman
I was at my local dealer the other day, I had seen that suzuki was having 0 percent finance, and went to check out a few other bikes including the new ninja 650 and vfr1200. I went over to sit on a ninja 1000 and a salesperson asked if I was interested, I told her if the insurance wasn't categorized wrong as a zx-10 and a superbike, I might consider it. I told her I did a quick online quote with progressive, my last insurer for the 500, and it came back at a staggering $6700 a year. She asked me if I'd ever done a insurance search with a company before and offered to do one. I played along and gave my information, about to be 24, single, 1 speeding violation. Insurance just call me back today with a couple quotes, and they found a "favorable" quote with Dairyland at $3308 a year. Thats like $250, $100 more than the bike payment would be. She told me 3 other companies came back at $10k, $11k, and $12k a year! THATS THE FUCKING COST OF THE BIKE!
Shame on Kawasaki for allowing the bike to be categorized as a superbike, when its really a faired Z1000, which has insurance 1/3 of the cost. This is a known problem all over the interwebz and Kawi is screwing themselves out of bike sales. Why not just get the Zx-10 then??? |
LOL, an insurance company called Dairyland? Where do they come up with this shit?
|
Based in Nebraska or wisconsin or something like that. I've heard folks in the central states talk about them on forums before. They aren't advertised here in ohio....
|
Once you each 25 it goes down quite a bit (or does here anyway)
|
Why don't you just get older and married?
That would bring your insurance down. Homeslice has a spreadsheet somewhere with the rate tables per demographic. |

Except that my Excel macro (not "program" ) would be smart enough to realize that there are always exceptions to the rule, and wouldn't trip out over them.

Woooooowwwwwwww. I pay $175 a year for both bikes
disclaimer: I have basic coverage. I figure the amount I saved by only having basic coverage would have already been more than what I paid for the CBR, and why would I bother insuring a klr more than just the basic insurance? |
Yea, apparently I need to be 1 yr older, married with children, and have my speeding violation fall off my record. And then it would be acceptable to pay a sane rate.... What a scam. But I go back to Kawi being at fault, having a VIN number that starts with ZX, and letting a street standard fall into the superbike category. Hell, I can hop on a Z1000 for a reasonable price, or a vfr1200 for about $95 a month.
And derf, this is the bare minimum BASIC collision/comp package. Basically the 25/50 with no uninsured or anything extra. 10-12k? Fucking absurd. Sorry, i'll be getting a differnt bike until im older. |
Yup. I think even my vfr is considered a sportbike. Not sure about super sport. I have basic basic for both bikes. Ill have to look up my paper work and tell ya what I pay and for what.
The only thing bad for me on my bike record is a ticket for no MC license but thhat was 5 or so years ago. My agent never mentioned it so I guess its dropped. |
you need to find someone who has a policy with those companies, and get a copy of the papers that come with it. They list all the discount codes available. If they think you will bail, they'll give you some discounts even though you don't really qualify. Like if you are a so-called "professional" you will get a discount, and they also have an equivalent discount for people who work in "trades" like plumbing, etc. And with my company there is another discount for belonging to a "professional association" which can bascially be anything, even a lame honors society.

State Farm. They go by engine size regardless of type of bike... Yes, a VTX 1800 cost more to insure with State Farm than a CBR1000RR...
Progressive is the WORST... I had them with my 500R... I turned 25, got my renewal a month later and it had gone UP almost $300/yr. I called and they said that they had re-evaluated the way they calculated rates for motorcycles and while I did get a discount for turning 25, the net result was an increase. I promptly told them to fuck off... then switched to State Farm. Cost less than 1/3 what I had paid before the rate increase... |

I laughed when I got a progressive quote on just liability. It was more than what my ninja 250 cost.

When I was shopping for a bike, I got quotes on a GSXR 1k, a 'busa, and the 1125. 1k = ~ $3300/year full coverage 'busa = ~ $4500/year full coverage 1125 = ~ $600/year full coverage Bought the 1125, ran the VIN, actual cost $485/year. I insure the 1125 and SV w/full coverage and it costs me about $575/year with $500 deductables. |

Reason I put it on the Suzuki/"repli-racer" stigma is the difference between them and the Buell. |
