HP2 sport wasn't designed and built to be a competitor with the jap market. HP2 sport is what it is, an exotic without the performance of a true sportbike. It's the Buell of BMW.

Built in much lower quantities, therefore they have to get some kind of return on it.
Plus it looks cool. |

Most bikes' price level is a function of the market, not of the manufacturing cost. Good examples are the first generation VMAX and several Ducati models. Both examples had tons of components that were over 10 years old, but still commanded a premium price. In other words, the manufacturers will charge what they can get. BMW probably breaks even or even loses for each S1000 they sell, but look at it as the cost of doing business.

Ohlins front and rear suspension, carbon everywhere. There is some stuff in there to justify a higher cost, but $10K?
I asked this question a while back. Personally, I would rather have the HP2, but I am not spending $26K on a bike.

yeah it looked like a nice enough bike but way out of the ballpark on the price for me anyway.

Those that want an HP2-Sport will buy one regardless if they get to demo one or not.

HP2 Sport is what you ride to impress yourself at the track.
S1000 is what you ride to impress everyone else on the way to the track. Is the HP2 Sport worth the money? HP2 is the bike for the existing customer base. S1000rr is the bike for all the newbies. |
