Default New Project - Electric Go Kart

We had some friends stay with us last week for the holiday and they brought their electric Razor drifting cart for their kids. The thing is awesome and I was extremely bummed that I was too big to ride it. However, the wife did and she loved it. She wanted to buy one for her and our boys (when they are older) but I told her no - I would build one for us and we can buy them a razor when they are old enough. Think we'll bypass the hopped up Power Wheels for them all together.

So I've been reading up on them and how different people have used different motors, controllers, etc. I know Derf said he built one in response to my FB post (even though he offered absolutely no details on the config he ran) but I was curious if anyone else here has done it?

I'm leaning towards a 36v golf cart or forklift motor and over-volting to 48v. Would use 4 deep cycle batteries. I've started keeping an eye on Craigslist and eBay for kart frames and used/rebuilt motors.

Check out some of these vids I found.

And on a related note, here's a guy that dropped an R1 engine on a go kart frame.

I race the electric karts and the gas karts--the gassers are sooo much nicer. Just sayin'.

Still--sweet project! I think the cheap way to do it is to get a starter motor out of a big v8 in a junkyard somewhere, if'n ya want a budget.

Damn, I want to take that 50k watt one up to Austin Park & Pizza and own all those shitty little broken-down, no-throttle response, lawnmower motor jobs.

Thanks for the links but I'm not looking to spend that much coin on a frame.

This guy races his electric cart at the track and pulls 12.3 sec 1/4 mile times. LOL

Wow. Really like this guy's setup. They don't make the B&S Etek any more but there's plenty of others with the same specs.
