Default A little experiment

I'm in a statistics class - blech - and for that class I have a project. Most of the other people are doing actual surveys. And, I thought about doing something like it. But, did a little extra work to prove a point to my daughter.

I created an account on Facebook, pictures of other people - chose another location - just an alter-ego. And, added people from who Facebook recommended. 50 women, 50 men. RANDOM people. I'm now tracking to see who accepts the friend request.

The first 10 took 14 minutes. Pictures of their children, where they live, what possessions they have... I shouldn't be shocked. But...

I constantly get requests from people I don't even know.

I'm pretty trigger happy with that ignore button though. If I don't know them....ignore!

You know, I just had another 10 within the last hour. Two of them have written on the wall "Hey, great to see you!" and "Wow, glad you found me, how have you been?" I'm so confused

The funny thing - if I get even one person, their friends will EASILY accept. I got one, then the next 9 were all mutual friends with the first. Mutual friends doesn't mean shit.

I have a high school, a university [one on one coast, one on the other]. ONE picture. It's all pretty non-descript.

I had 26 friends on Facebook before I de-activated my account....all people that I know personally either through riding or work. It quickly became apparent that it was pointless as none of us are the "air your life on the internet through words and pictures" kind of people....so most of us de-activated our accounts.

I've never understood the people with 500+ "friends"....with every single thing they ever thought and every photograph that includes them posted to the Net. It's gotta be driven by some kind of hyper narcissim or something. *shrug*

same here.

People from places like here are good about including their screen names in the comments of the request

I don't always just write them off because I don't know their name. I know a lot of people by screen names or from riding and never heard their last name before Facebook, so I'll look for mutual friends first then check out their info and pics. If I don't know them and they haven't sent a message explaining who they are they get ignored.

I have people I play those stupid games with and don't know but they almost always send the request asking to be added for that game and they are regulated to a restricted group with limited access to my profile...no pics and no info given to them.

Well ya I check to see if we have mutual friends and maybe I just didn't know their last name.

But honestly I get requests from people that I have NO mutual friends with and have no clue how I could ever know them. I always wonder why they're friend requesting me in the first place.

I went to school with or ride with every single person on my friends list. If I don't know you, you're getting the ignore button.
