Default Prison or Public School?

Sometimes, like now, you just don't know whether to laugh or cry.

The school year is coming to a close and thus my son is ending his career as a Kindergartner. Thus far, I've been displeased by the way the school district handles....well....pretty much everything.

From their measly 15 minute recesses (gee, I can't figure out why all the kids are so hyper, they must have ADHD, someone call Pfizer!) to their mandatory SILENT lunches (also 15 min.) and their severe punishments for minor infractions of ludicrous rules (What's that boy, you talking to a friend on your lunch break? Well, say goodbye to Field Day motherfucker) well, the whole thing just seems wrong.

Now, with two weeks left to go we get a notice from the district regarding the dress code. A friendly reminder that mohawks are not allowed and an addendum that states all SPIKED HAIR will not be allowed and children will be sent home. Wow, I mean, I had spiked hair while working in a corporate office. Unreal.

I know we just had a big discussion on home schooling vs. public schooling and the purposes of socialization and so forth but I gotta say....home school is looking better and better all the time.

What else have you found out about home schooling so far? I may seriously make the switch next year.

Conservative Christians? I went to a parochial elementary school run by Nuns. White shirt, blue tie, blue pants and black shoes every day. The girls wore white shirts, string ties, and blue, pleated jumpers. Pledge of Allegiance and prayers every morning.

Strict? Eight weeks of Boot Camp was a piece of cake compared to eight years of parochial school. Sister Rose in seventh grade was supposedly thrown out of the Marines for being too mean. I was a Baby-Boomer, so we had over 120 kids in fourth grade, before they split us up. One Nun, who was about four-feet-tall, kept us all in line.

My mom wanted me to go to a parochial high school run by Brothers. I heard they were weirder and meaner than Nuns. Luckily, my dad took my side and let me go to public high school. Except for all the religious crap, the education in parochial school was great, so tough it out.

I shouldn't have made the Conservative Christians comment as it has little to no bearing on my issues with the school. I was just making a commentary on the actual Texas Board of Education.

And just because you did something doesn't mean I want to, or that I want my son to.

My main point in all this is that children behave much better when their physical needs are met during the day. But instead of making them exercise, or instead of actually allowing them to socialize, they just use severe punishments and drugs to keep the kids in line.

the only good thing that comes to mind regarding public school is "my son is no longer in one" he graduated and I was very glad to be rid of that whole system in my life.
Wait until he gets in junior high and even worse high school. If you think the politics of a corp office are bad you won't believe the BS in the schools.

I don't understand the reasoning. In fact, I didn't even really believe my kid until I went up there to have lunch with him one day. They are not allowed to talk, at all, during lunch. I had to whisper to him and then look around to make sure we weren't going to get in trouble.

If their class is deemed to be talking the entire class gets their recess taken away. When the kids go out to recess the offending class has to walk around the perimeter of the playground in a single file line as their "exercise" for the 15 minute recess.

Yea, that's a great idea. Lets calm these kids down by making sure they are completely full of unreleased and bursting energy.

How is it that the absolute stupidest people in a community can be in charge of educating the rest?

Is it a Christian school? If so, it should be considered private.

I cant imagine a public school getting away with those kinds of rules. How horrible. That must be like a concentration camp.

If it is private, why dont you look at public? Not the best route, but definitely not prison. I grew up in N Texas and loved the public schools, but back then you were allowed to holler and yell and make a ruckus at recess.
