My 68 year old mother is asking for my recommendations regarding a notebook or netbook. You may be under estimating older people.

First of all how many people do you think have a desktop computer that go out and setup a wireless network without knowing what it is or without needing it? I can't see any doing that.

I have wireless setup and then switched internet providers. When I came home my router wasn't hooked up, it was because the new one has a built in wireless router. So if someone uses the same company for internet then they could have a wireless network without needed one.

My 79 year old great uncle recently got a laptop to replace the laptop he had for 6 years. Unfortunately since he had a stroke a couple years ago he can't remember shit about how to use a computer so I have to function as phone support every few days.

Something to keep in mind on wireless is the DSL modems that Verizon provides in at least some parts of the country have a wireless router built in.

Fortunately those wireless router/DSL modems are set up with fairly good encription, by default, and a massively long WEP or WPA key.
