I think it's more like what Troy said in having the piss ran out of them and not being taken care of the way they should. |

the issue is exactly what you pointed out...
but lets look a little closer: the 02-03 tranny has the worst reputation, it was ment to hold 164whp and does it well this is the first generation of the usdm wrx and in stock form it is fine, you start adding go fast goodies it reaches its limits fast and blows 2nd usually sometimes third, but adding a stage 2 which is just some pipe work and a Accessport tuner and your looking at adding 50hp and more torque. I more then doubled the hp and its holding it, i cant get wild and abuse it but i knew that going in. the rule of thumb is that the 02-03 can safetly hold 300hp at the crank, the sti which has thicker gears can hold 400hp at the crank which is still a little less ~ then i am making, needless to say i have never launched my car as fas the engine is concerned a major issue is oil starvation at the #4 cylinder due to the oil sensor being set at ~3 psi and its just too damn low, once it hits that low the damage is done, which is what happened to me. when they rebuild the car they replaced it with a aftermarket unit that is set at 12 psi, which is well above the safetly margin, so if it dips i know i have a issue before we have reached the land of its already fucked up. the main reason is its so stupid simple to just crank up the boost and disregard the reliability of the engine, if 14 psi is good, 25 psi is god! well it will make power, till it doesnt any more lol, to safely make power the supporting mods need to be in place and most ppl skimp on them unfortunately |
