Default Alarms, do you pay attention?

I was at the U of Miami hospital this morning when the fire alarm went off.

Not a single person, staff or patient missed a step.

It was annoying but nobody even bothered to ask if it was a drill or test or posibly the real deal. I mentioned to the wife that if the place was on fire, we'd all be burned alive then went back to my reading.

Between blaring car alarms, over sensitive sensors at the mall, false fire alarms, neighbors forgetting to deactivate their ADT, etc, have we become immune to these noises?

Do you pay attention if you hear an alarm of some sort?

No, they're stupid. In my experience, nobody bothers looking unless they know it's THEIR alarm.

I tend to take notice.

Fire is something I tend not to mess with.

I concur, unfortunately it seems that every hurricane, lightning storm or power outage sets off half the fire alarms in S. Florida.

Eventually, you learn to tune them out.

Fire alarm? You bet your ass I pay attention. Car alarm? I couldn't care less. Bank alarm? I make a B line in the opposite direction of the bank. My house alarm? I grab my 12ga pump and wait for cops to arrive.

I guess it depends on what you are use to.

15 years ago, most people paid attention to car alarms before they became the norm.

I've never heard a bank alarm.

What if it was your neighbor's house alarm? What about a neighborhood you weren't familiar with?

my one neighbor has an alarm system that is on a PA system that says "call the police"

i refuse to call the police, cheap fucker couldnt pay for a system that does it on it's own, why should i be their volunteer ADT operator

it seems as though every 5 minutes another alarm goes off for something. especially the goobers with new car alarms set so sensitive that a toy poodle farting 50 feet away sets it off.

i hardly look in their direction anymore.

When I was a kid I remember being in my moms car and hearing a bank alarm going off. My mom hung a quick illegal u-turn as soon as she realized the alarm was coming from the bank.

Depends on the neighbor, If I like them or know them really well, and If I know they are home, I'll roll over there to check it out. If it's a neighbor I don't like or I know they are out of town, I wont enter the home but I will keep my eyes peeled for nefarious persons in the area.

After the OKC bombing, at work we are required, no exceptions to evacuation every time the fire alarm goes off. Thus I am conditioned to leave if a fire alarm is going off in a building. Better safe than sorry.

PS: I voted before I read the thread, I thought it was about car alarms, which I ignore.
