When I've seen people turn into stalkers, it's generally (yes, I've seen it multiple times) been after a relationship that was either very intense, or very broken. Mental illness would be a good description.
The worst I've seen involved a guy who was insanely jealous. If he saw a car in the driveway that didn't belong to his girl he'd circle the house and look in every window, just to make sure that she wasn't screwing around on him. He'd drive by at 1:00am to make sure she was alone, without ever going up to the door. On multiple occasions he did just that and then called to accuse her of cheating on him at that very moment. Then he broke it off and SHE became the stalker; constantly checking up on who he was out with, calling his friends, and showing up at his place out of the blue. Some people just seem to be irretrievably broken. The world is fortunate when two of them find each other, saving two 'normal' people from having to suffer.
