Hard to say... They had no verifiable cause of death... everything was circumstantial... and the charges were very specific to their theory... The defenses opening argument could have been enough to provide a reasonable doubt and the charges didn't reflect any other possibilities. If there was any way they failed, it was by going for the murder charges... That said, they didn't have much of a choice other than to go for the murder charges... damned if they do, damned if they don't.
