He was working on his psychology thesis and you were the unknowing participant. He was observing how shoppers would react in a situation where they understand that there is something wrong and are potentially able to gain more than expected through the situation. You gave him statistical data that he could use to formulate his conclusion, and for that, you should feel good.

Also, he came in those gloves.

Same thing happened to me. There was one last pair of smalls on these certain gloves I buy at the honda dealership. It was on the "get rid of" rack. I asked if this was correct since it was the last pair. He said no but gave me the discount any ways.

Agree with everyone else that you did the right thing. You brought it to their attention that it was priced incorrectly. They chose to sell to you at the price marked, regardless of their reasoning for doing so.
