Almost every lab I have meet was hyper and out of control. I'm sure their owners were the major cause but it still has clouded my opinion of them.

Mine is extremely intelligent. Doesn't mean he listens perfectly, but he's a good dog and is trained.

Marko is right, labs can be super obedient, but if you get a bad one it won't be. That's pretty much true of any breed though.
One of my high school friend's dad had his labs trained to military standard. I wouldn't even call the damn things dogs anymore because they were more well behaved than people.
