Does getting a lawyer for a speeding ticket usually work?
Just got dinged pretty good. And I'm wondering if this is actually worth my time, or do I just go an plead my case and hope for the best?

You're gonna pay for it but they make it substantially easier when you get to court and can help you avoid points

If so by how much? Is the actual amount different than the amount you are being accused of? Were you tagged by Laser,Radar, trailing (speed matching) or estimation? Do you have a history of speeding? Do you own an iPhone? Are you prone to gaffes? Can you pay cash? Are still reading this? Why not just tell me the movie you want to see? |

I dunno, ive had some decent luck winging it on my Own, in the case of drpa vs dave and derf, I got off with less of a fine, no points, and no lawyer fees.dave paid a speeding ticket 5mph over while I got a careless ticket. Go in see what the prosecutor is willing to give, if you are not happy tell thejudge you want a lawyer and need to hire one.

It used to work much better for me than it has over the past 5 years.
About 8 years ago I managed to get off of a 125mph in a 55 for $40 and nothing on my record, that included the lawyer's fee. Now about the only thing they can do for me is get me Deferred Adjudication without me having to show to court.

Do I try to find out who the prosecutor is and contact them? Or do I speak with them on the day of my court date?

1) Depends. Are you in "stunt driving" law territory?
2) You want to apply for a "first attendance", at which you can discuss options with The Crown. You also want to request discovery of any and all evidence they have (officer's notes, etc.).

I don't know about NS, but here we have ex police officers that will act as lawyers for you. The cost is usually about the same as the fine, but they try to get rid of the points, which will save assloads on insurance.
I believe they even waive their fees if they don't win.

In NC, you can go in to the court house and talk to the DA before hand, sometimes they'll deal, sometimes not. I got off for about $500 on my last ticket using a lawyer. Good luck, bro.
