Further, believe it or not, sometimes technology does actually help. I have used and trained with an M-16 and iron sights. I have used and trained with an M-4 and both CCO and ACOG. If I am going to be kicking doors and clearing rooms, and those are my choices, I'll take the M4 and CCO. The M500 is preferable to both however, in that scenario. |

I'll look at 'em when I get my AR after I'm home. Don't think I can convince my supply SGT to order me one

And when you're not kicking down doors (how many doors are there to kick in the mountains of Afghanistan), how useful is that reflex sight?
I'd take a short scope like the ACOG any time for general usage. For close range, you can easily triangulate by bracing the weapon against your shoulder and look over the top of it. How do you think that we shot fast at close range back in the days?

Here in Kosovo, we kick no doors, except in training. We are here on a peacekeeping mission. Currently we are doing presence patrols only, and minimizing our show of force as we downsize our numbers here in an effort to move out completely, and let the locals handle it themselves. 2. The reflex sight is still very useful, don't worry, I was skeptical at first as well, until I got to actually use it. Like previously stated, it is used with both eyes open, for quick acquisition of targets, and the red dot (turned down to a level to not wash out the target, in case you are worried about accuracy of too large of a red dot) is easy to put on target. 3. I agree the ACOG is a good piece of equipment, and has it's place. For the M-4 with a stated effective range of 500 meters it could be useful about 20% of the time in actual urban combat. It may be of more use in the mountainous Afghanistan terrain. I can not comment on that as I have not yet had the opportunity to serve there. 4. As for what you did "back in the day" I do not know. From your earlier posts I would say you went from poking people with sticks to eventually using your far superior open sights. But I am just a young GI given the gov'ts current technology. Sorry. |
