You sure? I could have swore that I heard someone on the Steve Irwin exclaim that if they didn't find the Jap fleet as many as 50 or 60 whales would be murdered... It's one of the things that puzzled me the most about this show. Why all the drama over such a small number of whales.

Okay, they(tree huggers) say that 25,000 whales have been killed in over 34 years...but that's total world wide. Not just the Japanese. BTW did you know that they are against tuna fishing as well and have a campaign that is trying to put a stop to that as well? Son, I really like my tuna! WTF? Why don't they go bother those Deadliest Catch guys? I don't like crab all that much. In fact, what a great show, Whale Wars vs Deadliest Catch! I have a feeling the Sea Shepherd guys would get their butts kicked...

What makes my preference that the Japanese not kill whales to eat any more valid than a Hindu's preference that cows not be killed to feed me?
We aren't looking at the extinction of cows anytime soon. Whales, on the other hand, are being hunted out of existence.

I don't know... I find it hard to believe that we really know what the whale population is in the vastness of our oceans...

BTW check out my camera thread and tell me what you think, I honestly value your opinion on the subject...

Know? Perhaps not. Postulate, based on the numbers we're no longer seeing in their mating areas and usual stomping grounds? Sure.

The quota they usually refer to is on whales that are on an endangered list. Most of the whales they are killing are not on that list.

Frankly, I'm surprised no one has been killed on that untrained, unlicensed crew...

The only thing awesome about cows is the way they taste when cooked over an open flame.

Whales are much more entertaining.

Save the whales motherfucker, talk is cheap!

no, it's somewhere like 600-1000. They have several quotas for different species. They can take a bunch of Minke whales because they are like the rabbits of the whale population and aren't in that much danger of extinction.

As Trip said the majority of whales they kill (Minke) are nowhere near extinction, or even endangered (population estimates usually start at the mid hundreds of thousands and go up from there). For the species more at risk the Japanese limit themselves to 50 each year out of estimated populations in the tens of thousands. I guess it comes down to what a person's objection is. If it is a moral objection, tough shit. If it is an environmental/species protection issue then the Minke killings should be acceptable.
