Beautiful pups! I dont think Ive ever seen such attractive Shiba's. Whats your take on them as pets? I've always admired the breed, but dont know anyone who had first and experience with them to ask.

Mine is a 3 1/2 year old male and is a great inside pet and watchdog. When I say watchdog I guess I should say "early warning system". He's really not much of a threat to hurt anyone (although I'm sure he could) but will bark at anyone that comes near the house or yard.

He was the easiest dog I've ever house trained and NEVER has an accident in the house and can be left in the house for 10-11 hours. He never chews up anything but we do leave several chew toys around for him to play with.

The only real downside is that he sheds and twice a year will "blow his coat"...that's alot of hair but if you will brush him regularly it isn't that bad.

A typical male Shiba is "supposed" to be 18-23 lbs. but mine is 31 lbs.

We also have a cat that my wife owned when we got married and he's fine with the cat too.

Most of the dogs I've owned in the past were mainly outside dogs...Pitbulls...Rotties...and an Alaskan Malumute.

I wanted an inside dog but not the same dog that most others have and he fit the bill.

So far so good.

don't be too sure about that. I thought that about our retarded boxer to. We have a toy poodle (avatar) for early warning.(as in anything within 2 miles of the house gets barked at) and the boxer just kind of lopes around and looks at the door. Until a fella tried to open our door without knocking once. as he opened the door she was there at the ready, hackle up and a growl straight out of hell came out of her. needless to say he thought better of trying to come in. Never did find out who he was or why he tried to enter our house without knocking. There were some burglaries going on at the time. All I know is he never came back. Don't know if she'd go after anyone, I think not, she's way to trusting and friendly but I do know now that she has a growl that could scare the crap out of you.

Yeah his hair on his back stands up and he s and growls and barks but usually will back peddle and keep his distance. He's actually kind of timid around strangers BUT I never say never when it comes to a dog biting...he might. He does have good sized teeth for the size dog he is and I wouldn't want to get bit by him.

My dog does his job.. well used to. He's kind of lazy now since he's older. If someone tried coming in that he didn't know he was right up at the door doing his thing. He bit several people that tried forcing themselves in. We warned every one of them too. Nothing big, just a nip to say gtfo. It's pretty funny because once you get to know him he's just a big baby.

Yours are cuter though, i like their apricot color.

They do come in other colors. But I (we) prefer the sesame color. I think it is the most common.

He is very fluffy. Max was fluffier when he was little but not quite that much.

Stubborn, independent, mind of their own. But very loyal and intelligent. When Max was little he only barked when it was necessary. Now that he is older he doesn't bark too much, but will growl every now and then if he sees another dog in the yard or something. Liam is too small/young just yet.
Obviously I liked having Max so well I agreed to another one. What sold Erik is that they don't bark their heads off at every little thing and they are the right size for our house... not too small they get under your feet to trip over and not too big that they can't sleep with you.

Yeah, Max was up to 52lbs in January, then I switched to "senior" food and he is down to 48lbs. I still want him to lose more, but I'm happy with the progress so far.
