Steve Jobs whole persona is for people to either really love him or hate the shit out of him. That's who he is, he is either selling directly to you or telling you to go fuck yourself.

Pretty much. But sometimes that's what you need, in order to make an impact. Otherwise you end up making cookie-cutter products.

If a generic CEO were in charge of Apple, they never would have invested as much into their design department, or given them as much control.

Apple has led the way in forcing the business world to realize that people want products that actually look good as well as feel good in the hand. We are seeing other industries follow suit (cars, appliances, furniture, etc.).

The fact that Jobs was such a dick about control/sharing/iTunes etc is a separate issue IMO.
