I don't buy the story at all, but am far more amused how much it bothers you. If the kid accomplished everything mentioned below it sounds like he's done as much, if not more, than you and he's only 18.

Cases where parents lavish such flashy gifts to the their children seem to be more about an image thing for the parents vs anything to do with the kid.

some of my relatives from CA are coming this weekend for a wedding, and yeah they are hong kong chinese........lol , and very stereo typical. all about the status, $ and showing it off.
