Yeah, those things don't work. Plus, if they were powerful enough to trip the light I'd worry about it being bad for my electrical system.

As someone who knows the electronics behind the light loops and has worked with parking control systems, I can tell you that they're a placebo.

There's a few lights nearby that are difficult to trip on the bike. Most of them I figured out where the line is, but there's still one that just won't budge. I have to run if from midnight to ~6.
On a similar note.. I hate main street. They have the lights on a timer. Aside from the typical hit one red and you hit them all, the lights always change at the wrong times. There's no one in sight coming down the crossing street, and all the sudden the light changes red! I sit and angrily wait for the invisible cars to go, and just as the light is turning someone gets caught by the red on that side. I used to laugh, but these are some long lights.
