I've got mad respect for anyone willing to do hard, dangerous work for the benefit of my safety/freedom. I don't have the balls or inclination to enlist myself so the burdens on me to show them extra respect and help them out whenever I can.
We get a lot of military and deploying military going through the airport I work at and I make it a point to ask them if they need help finding their gates and thank them for their service. For some reason they're made to travel in uniform which seems to make other passengers intimidated by them and stare rather than talking with them. Pretty lame.

that's only the Army... maybe the USMC... the airforce is told NOT to travel in uniform... until we board a contracted flight of ONLY military. it's annoying only when you see the army get upgraded to first class while I sit in coach...

then again... they are over there for 12months at min... and in the shit the whole time... so I can't complain too much. though being 6'3" it'd be nice to not have my knees jammed into the seat infront of me for 8+hrs.

I was actually in the Atlanta Airport when a big group of Soldiers got home, and every time they came up the concourse the people there waiting cheered and clapped. It was pretty awe-inspiring, and made me feel proud of the people we have in this country, in uniform and out.

Happens every time I am there. It really is nice to see everyone just stop what they are doing and give a well deserved applause.

It seems like there are a ton of serving members on here. A huge THANKS to each and everyone of you.

I feel for you guys who have to go to Iraq and Afghanistan. Thirty-nine years ago I didn't even want to join the service. On a Saturday, I came home to find my mother crying and my father kind of happy. That's when they gave me the envelope from the selective service. Two weeks notice that I was being drafted.

In the Army, we had to wear a dress uniform to get a heavily-discounted, military-standby ticket from the base to home and back. My flight from Oakland to Bien Hoa was a charter (Saturn Airlines) and we wore fatigues. I had a window seat, so I was lucky to see Mount Fuji when we refueled in Osaka. But I also got to see all the bomb craters while preparing to land in Vietnam.

Maybe you've heard stories about guys spitting on soldiers during the Vietnam War. I never saw it. If someone did that to me, they would've been picking up their teeth. People always bought me drinks at airports, even though I was under 21. Unless I'm running for a plane, I'll always buy a drink for someone in uniform.

I live with the Iraqi army and take them out on missions. It sure is a crap hole I live in but someones got to train and lead them so they can take over for themselves.

Depends on how we're traveling. Usually we're told to wear civies too.

could be the guard thing though too.

I'll have to remember to get a pic of me in uniform this weekend.
