In the Navy we send them to grease the relative bearing on the bridge, or to fetch a bucket of steam.

Personal favourite is when we take an old plum bob, tie some weak string to it. Tell the new guy it's a very expensive device used to test thermal layers in the water. He lowers it down over the side. It falls off. We convince him he just lost a 25,000 dollar sensor, and wait for the fun to unfold.
