I can see the steam from the cooling tower at Nine Mile over the hills not too far from here. Used to jog right past the place in college (it looked really cool when the spray from the bottom of the cooling tower would freeze in the winter). I figure there's no point worrying about it - if any of the 2 reactors there go, it goes (there are 2 current GE BRW's: #1 has been in service since '69 and is a BWR-2 and one of 2 oldest reactors in the US. #2 is a BWR-5 and has been in service since '88) Hell, there are recent plans ('08) to build a 3rd reactor there (a Generation III+ four loop pressurized water reactor). I'm sure this incident won't help that cause.

Nope. The way the nuclear fission works in a water reactor wouldn't cause a nuclear weapon style explosion.

So far the tv news outlets have told me two things.
Foxnews has asked "is the Obama administration response to the nuclear disaster in japan (while showing map of north Korea) a sign of weakness and proof that they are out of touch with mainstream America?"
Every other station has announced that it's Chernobyl all over again and japan will have to be abandoned and launched into the sun (followed by special report that every Japanese product in my house is radioactive.

I think he is saying a massive dose of radiation would kill a person within minutes from radiation sickness. From my extensive research (I watched John Cusak die in "Fat Man and Little Boy" probably 10 years ago) we aren't that lucky and it is an extremely miserable existence for the few days a person has left.

Furthest I've lived from one was in the Houston area, with the nearest being around 100 miles away. Closest was around 12 miles from Three Mile Island. I'm currently 60 or so miles away from the nearest reactor.

Haha this.... but I was reading through Chirnobyl stuff last night and it seemed like the only people that died within days were the firefighters and cleanup crew that were on site for extended periods of time.
