The local track's pro shooter is stuck in his old business model and blames me for his loss of business, over the last few years. What he doesn't realize is that my business has also been dropping off, over the same time period. People are tired of the same-ol'-same-ol', and money is tight in the industry, these days. If you don't give them something new, they won't buy.

I've given them a web gallery, when the local guy completely dropped his website. To get his shots you have to stick around the track, after the day is done, and go through them on one of his computers. To get mine you sit at home and go through my galleries, at your leisure, then email me to say what you'd like to buy.

I've introduced the idea of doing a large number of candid shots that, while they aren't really marketable to sponsors and such, provide some real memories about what goes on around the track. When a well respected racer and long-time member of the industry died, a couple of years back, I seemed to be the only person who had a shot of him that wasn't on his bike, in helmet and full gear. Others have since started doing what, to me, seemed like the most important thing at the track; documenting EVERYTHING that goes on, not just what happens on the asphalt.

Now I'm hoping that my marketing of a book will raise the bar again. I may not be the best photographer at the track, but I seem to be the only one who is trying to takes things beyond how they've "always been done."
Good for you, man. People that refuse to evolve are gonna be left behind.

Well at this point I'd have no problem with the track's pro being "left behind", since the considerable respect that I had for him died last season, when he treated me to 5 minutes of calling me an asshole.

He must have lens-envy...lol I started getting serious about photography this year, but mine is mostly musicians...have a few lined up who want portfolio pics so I bought a studio lighting and backdrop kit in addition to adding some cam-toys to the mix. I just got a Sony 50mm f1.8 fixed lens and a 75-300mm Tamron to round out my standard 18-55mm that came with the camera. I also got a new Panasonic Lumix point-and-shoot to get shots off the back of the VFR while riding. Those Lumix cameras are the shiznit! I can't wait for a good long ride to get some shots. Good luck and keep up the good work! As far as the old photographer...well, if he can't keep up with technology, it's not your fault. People want to see their pics now and not have to drive to a track to look at them the next day. Oh well...

Thanks

I'm not very familiar with Nashville, having only been through there a few times, but in addition to your backdrops you might want to consider looking around town for graffiti heavy and industrial sites. A couple of people in our local camera club do music photography and much of their best work is done in places like that.

There's something wrong with your pics. There's no naked chicks in them. You need to try harder.

I've always wanted to take good pics. Just can't ever find the right moment.

Sorry about the lack of nekkididity. Don't get much of that, around the track.
