Our problems aren't as big of news over there. outside of major cities. Plus the state controlled media isn't like the bombardment we get here. They know of him, but he isn't as recognizable as he is here.

Even when I didn't know wtf soccer was and lived in an area of the USA where soccer wasn't even played back in the day, I knew who Pele was.

Is Oprah really a recognizable name outside of western culture? I'm asking cuz I really don't know. I know she's a force her in the States and has some appeal to Europeans, but her topics seem to be aimed more at someone who lives in a commercial society. She seems like someone who would have limited recognition outside of western culture.

That's my point. Lots of people who know his name wouldn't know him to see.
Besides if we're going soccer I'd think Ronaldo or Ronaldinho (sp) would be more recognizable. Hell those teeth on Ronaldinho and that hair alone! Oprah....I'm not sure on that one. She'd be recognizable in England and Europe that's for sure but probably some areas of the world not so much. What about the Dalai Lama? |

I was thinking the same thing about the athletes listed. Shaq? Jordan? Maybe to teenaged American kids. But, we're talking about the world here. The pope is probably #1. Are we counting him as a world leader? |
