Sounds like bad RAM to me. You at least get a message stating something about not being able to find a bootable drive if the HD is bad. If any RAM is bad, what you're describing is about as far as you get. It could also be a bad CPU.

Bad memory is very unusual with Dells. If the hard drive has grown bad sectors, especially in the area used for Virtual Memory, is can present in the way described. Let's just say that I have a HELL of a big install base of Dell systems
