Nah, I think they are working him into the resistance. He is going to be the bad guy for the good guys. Kinda like Sawyer on Lost.

My guess is that the skitters are one of the conquered species, and there will definitely be alien spies that look and act human.

why do the mech's look like Ed-209?

You might have something there, with the Skitters being another conquered race. That gear could cover a 'harness.'
