Looks-wise I put it about equal with the Yaris. Both are better looking than the Fit, Aveo, and Korean offerings.
I see your new'er cars and raise you a 92 civic.. How does a car thats 18 years old average 40+ mpg.. That's better than any non hybrid car on the road today.. Fucking 3000lb compact cars these days..

They were lighter.
The NOx emission regulation were not as stringent as today, so you could run leaner and you didn't have to warm up the cat quickly either, which reduces fuel consumption.
They were much slower.

People don't want to buy a car, even an "economy" car, unless it has power windows, door locks, A/C, sat/nav, 16 airbags, enough sound deadening to fill a Lexus, and enough steel to withstand getting run over by Bigfoot. Most consumers who want an "economy" car aren't willing to give anything up to achieve actual economy so manufacturers just build smaller cars that only give the appearance of economy. Personally I'd rather have one of Sir Alec Issigonis' original Minis weighing 1,500lbs running a B18C5 Integra Type-R engine and still get great mileage, but I guess I'm uncommon and nobody really builds the cars I would want.

Yeah. They are a bit lighter. One example is my 92 civic vs my dads 2005 civic hybrid. My dads car is slower and only gets about 38 mpg. Weight diff is about 500lbs.

Yeah..........But which Civic would you take on a long trip? Old Civics have horrible road & tire noise.

I took a 93 Civic Ex manual sedan on a number of long road trips. I thought it was very comfortable.

Guess it depends what you're used to. My parents have one of the 90's base model Civics, don't know which year, and it's much noisier than today's cars, or even my 94 Probe.
