The process of leaking a prototype device to generate buzz about a product you don't quite yet have ready for market to a friendly tech website who will promote the gizmo well before it's ready to go.

Gizmodo's finding of that Apple iPhone 4G months before it's released is clearly a case of protohype.

Leaking photos and specs to guage consumer response is one thing, giving an actual prototype to a blog is completely different. Considering the reports of iPad prototypes being literally kept in secure rooms at the New York Times i cant see Apple completely changing their strategy for the iPhone 4.

Especially to the point where the unfriendly blog (apple threatened these guys before with C&D letters) had it for weeks and took the damn thing apart and documented every little chip in the device. This is releasing all the specs of the phone to the competition well ahead of the release date.

So, it turns out that Apple isn't thrilled about media companies dropping big bucks for its secret prototypes--on Friday night, California's Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team reportedly entered Gizmodo senior editor Jason Chen's residence with a warrant, seizing four computers, two servers, and a number of other incidentals (including flash drives, cameras, and cell phones).
