In 3G GSM, you can talk and use data(tether) at the same time. In 3G CDMA, you can't talk and use data at the same time. 4G, GSM is LTE. Nothing changes for GSM. Verizon and Sprint both have been going GSM for their 4G. But they are both still using CDMA for voice calls. Android phones and Windows phones on Verizon and Sprint have seperate radios for CDMA and LTE. So while you are using the CDMA radio for voice, the LTE radio can do data if you are in a LTE area. iPhone 5 has both it's CDMA and LTE radio on one chip. The way they designed that phone, they didn't make it so the LTE and CDMA could work at the same time to save on design costs so it's very similar to the AT&T iPhone 5. All they would have had to do was put one more antenna on the phone and voice/data would of worked at the same time.

no, iPhone 5 can do voice/data on any GSM network including AT&T. Just can't do it on Verizon/Sprint/any other CDMA voice network. Not sure about Tmo, people use to be using just 2G GSM to be able to use the iphone on tmobile, not sure how it works now.

So neither the 4 or 5 can do it on Verizon. Huh, I was this close to signing up with them.
Maybe that's why Verizon doesn't charge extra for tethering anymore. They know it's a flawed feature. Last edited by Homeslice; 09-23-2012 at 10:03 PM.. |

They still charge for unlimited. Looks like tmobile people can buy the Verizon iPhone and use it with the HSPA+ network. That may be an awesome alternative for people that don't mind paying full price for a phone.
