LG does the back lit method, and no problems reported with it. it is pretty flawless from personal experience.
The problems with backlit is the cost of dimming a group. Most companies doing it are using a less expensive dimming method that will cause bright areas around black to be less bright because they will dim a large block of LEDs. Once they start getting the technology down to individual LED dimming, it will be awesome.

backlit is going to be the way of the future once costs drop and technology for dimming get better. The way they dim in groups right now hurt it a lot, but once they can dim individual LEDs more effectively, this will be the TV to have with blacks as good as CRTs.
I know it's a different application but LED backlight technology has been around for a while in the aircraft industry.

Years ago (7+), we changed our LCD displays over to an LED backlight. It makes a huge difference and you get equal lighting throughout the display. You can have up to 25% of the LED fails and you would still get enough light to perform well. Less power consumption too which is a huge advantage in airplanes.

Back then though the displays had almost a purple tint to them when they were off but now they are a true black.

All this TV talk makes me wanna hook up my 42" back to my PC. Shit might as well see what Win7 looks like at that size.

When ever you do pick one out. Make sure it has AT LEAST 4 hdmi cables. I only have two and find my self unplugging one every so often.
