I have kids in the house - guns don't ever stay loaded with anything for that reason. But, I agree with bird-shot, snake-shot... not blow a hole through the wall shot for the first round.

Looks like a Coonan .357, though the slabby grips & counterweight are unfamiliar to me.

have you considered a keypad lockbox? Pretty easy to mount them where grubby little paws cant reach and still offer fast access if need be.

History, I was involved in a home invasion with a shot gun in my hands. I won. In a small space, a shot gun becomes similar to a baseball bat. I know.... they shouldn't get that close. Whatever. A room IS a small space. Maybe I'll tell you more one day.

My shot, with the. .45 colt... yes, that's a hole thru the side of it. I call it "beginners luck." I hit it 6 out of 10 shots at 20 feet-ish.

Good to hear you're enjoying it. I see you have a good reason for a large caliber too. Also very good to hear you came out on top.

I have a suggestion for starting to shoot with pretty much any weapon. Get yourself a large piece of cardboard as a target. 3' square works great.

You want to see where the bullets actually land when you shoot. No need to to put up a target on the cardboard at first, you're working on basic control. So every shot on the cardboard is good.

I would also find some light loads to start out with. Light bullets in the .45 long colt ( maybe even lead bullets if you don't mind the extra clean up work ). 20' is OK to start, 15' would be better. The main objective is building confidence. When you're shooting pie plate size groups, then put up a target.

Here's some of my handguns
