I think it was just stated best if you are an entertainer more than an artist, you are a sellout. Basically if you don't write your own music you are a sellout. If you do write your own stuff and you change your band/group/single person act sound to fit with the new fad, you are a sellout. If you require lip synching to perform dance numbers or lip synch, you are a sellout. If you are a major artist in a certain genre and you do a song with another major artist from a genre than has no association with yours, you are a sellout example: Nelly and Tim Mcgraw.





As far as who is pop and who is not, it's simple, if you hear them on your local top 40 radio station, they are pop. Usher, Britney Spears, Beyonce, Nelly, Nickelback, Panic at the Disco, etc... are all pop, because it's simply just popular music.

It has always been rare for one artist to ask permission to perform another artist's work. The respect tends to be shown by paying up, which is a legal requirement, but that can be skated on in many (if not most) cases.

Etta's voice has the bluesy feel to the song and is my personal preference. Beyonce gives it a really poppy feeling to it, where should be sung at the grammys with synthesised music. Christina is Christina, she tries to do to much with the song but has a good voice if she stopped trying to be a showboat and annoying the crap out of the audience.

I come from New Orleans though, I prefer the almost horse sounding voices of true jazz/blues artists as opposed to canned hollywood voices.

Remember the clip of the world famous violinist? Same principle. If he'd been jumping up and down, jiggling, etc, he'd have proven "entertaining" or at least different enough for people to take notice. Instead, he was playing a multimillion dollar instrument and some of the most beautiful and challenging pieces in the world, and pretty much no one took note.

Etta James can be be credited by many as making "At Last" a known piece, more mainstream than previous artists. Therefore, she does have some feelings of ownership, and to not even be consulted as courtesy by someone she likely sees as a teeny bopper, I can see her frustration. Beyonce lacked professional courtesy in the very least, one singer to another.

I must have missed something. What did she do that "lacked professional courtesy"?
