GM I have no issues being Alpha, when I had my own pack (6 total) there was no question who was the dominant pack leader so I am not worried about that. When I train an animal, it stays trained. When I snap my fingers, they respond. Thats part of the issue I have with labs is they arent as responsive as I expect.

I'm confused. Labs are easy to train and listen well if you train them.

My lab was retarded. She went to puppy school 3 times and obedience school twice, didn't listen for shit. I used the same exact training on my Boxer and he is well behaved.

Almost every lab I have meet was hyper and out of control. I'm sure their owners were the major cause but it still has clouded my opinion of them.

Mine is extremely intelligent. Doesn't mean he listens perfectly, but he's a good dog and is trained.

Marko is right, labs can be super obedient, but if you get a bad one it won't be. That's pretty much true of any breed though.

One of my high school friend's dad had his labs trained to military standard. I wouldn't even call the damn things dogs anymore because they were more well behaved than people.

Sounds like my BiL's lab. She doesn't step out of line, ever, for anything. Very well trained. My dog...not as much. He listens...but when he wants to he has a mind of his own.

Labrador Retrievers are currently the most popular breed used for Guide dogs. Most programs use Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, or crosses between Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers as guide dog candidates. Some programs use Labradoodles, Boxers, or Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. It is extremely rare for a private trainer to train a guide dog. Since very few programs would accept outside animals for training, other breeds are very difficult to obtain.

These breeds are chosen for their biddability, intelligence, ability and willingness to work long hours, ability to tolerate stress, good health, and public acceptability or recognition.

If you are having issue training a lab, it is not the lab that is the problem.
