#1 reason never to live anywhere near houston: Katrina Refugees now reside there.
My dad has lived all around the world. The middle east, China, south america, the north slope alaska to name a few and worked with all sorts of nationalities that are too many to name. The places he has lived in have been some of the worst conditions you can see in this world. With that stated, he absolutely refuses to move to Houston where his company's HQ is based. He hates the place and the people. He would rather work in a shit hole like China, the frozen isolated tundra of Alaska, the social restriction and desert of the middle east than ever go to this place.

Austin is way greener than Houston. Houston fucking smells. Crime rate, anyone? Riding in/around Austin > Riding in/around Houston. We have Moira.
Oh.. and 6th street is where it's at, bitches.

I'd go Austin over Houston BUT take what I say with a grain of salt because I've never been to either - a situation I'm hoping to rectify within the next year.
