that's what I was thinking... wonder if it's because it's an UP SCALE shopping center... I mean he mentioned it didn't have chain fenced doors because of it...

security devices dont have to be obtrusive to be effective, im assuming they were hoping that the worthless security guard was going to be enough of a deterrent

Two things.

Guard was in on it, because he disappeared before they entered and did not return until after they were gone. He also could have possibly undone any locks on the devices.

another thing, the store could have done it as an insurance scam.

I think scenario one is more probable.
