www.mouser.com edit: on further evaluation looks kinda dumb, you have to mount the stupid sensors next to the gear shift.

Why bother - a lot of the TRE's out there also have a gear indicator built in depending on where you get the TRE.

An old gear ind kit I had on my '01 had a two way switch attached to the shifter and you wired it to the neutral light. You start out in neutral and the unit could count up or down... Sometimes it would mess up and you had to go to neutral to reset it.

interesting concept - was that stock (I'm assuming not ), aftermarket or something home made/

I just built myself a Cigarette Plug for my bike. found a bunch on the internet for 50 made mine for 15.
