Default John Carter of Mars

Saw the movie, yesterday. If you're a fan of old Sci Fi, or can at least recognize that everyone from Cameron to Spielberg ripped off Edgar Rice Burroughs, you'll likely enjoy it.

If not, don't bother.

And that's what I was commenting on, when I mentioned recognizing that his work had been ripped off by everyone else. When every movie before it has ripped off your riffs, it can't be spectacular.

Maybe if Dejah Thoris had been naked, like she was in the books......

Well the movie itself ripped off the special effects of every movie before it. So it got back all it's book rip offs, by ripping off the rip offs.

Even thought the story was first, the presentation was last.

Think that looked like a rip-off? Wait until J. Michael Straczynski finally manages to release his movies based on E. E. "Doc" Smith's "Lensmen" series of books. It'll make it look like Star Wars was completely ripped off, despite having been written in 1934.

I liked it but, had trouble immersing myself into it since they changed so much from the books. I did like the beginning sequence with the union officers. It wasn't in the books but, did help establish his fighting spirit.

Oooo... didn't know he was working on that.
I've never read the 'Lensmen' stuff, but I've heard a good bit about it, and I've been a JMS fan since Babylon 5.

The Star Wars story wasn't anything that special or original for the most part, hell you can try some of it to the bible if you wanted to, the thing that makes the movie classic is the innovation of cinematics in it really drove that movie. So busting Star Wars balls for the story is useless. That movie is classic. The Princess of Mars is classic for the book and the series that followed, the movie wasn't that special.
