Default Who do YOU tip?

One more topic on tipping.

Obviously there are certain professions in which giving / receiving a tip is expected.

There are others that some people tip and other people don’t.

Now it seems like tips jars are popping up in places that I would never consider tipping.

So, who do you tip?

Who do you refuse to tip?

I won't tip the airport shuttle bus driver...I can lift my own bag.

I worked at an "HQ" back in college (like a home depot or Lowes) and I use to get tips for loading heavy stuff. I once got a $50 from a contractor for helping him load about 30 bags of mulch on his trailer. Shocked the hell out of me...never knew people "tipped" for stuff like that. Made me appreciate the "art of tipping" and so anytime I get a little "extra" from someone who's clearly going above and beyond what their hourly wage dictates I tip…unless the hand comes out in anticipation of a tip (doorman in NYC once) and then I just HAVE to shake their hand just to see the look on their face

I hate having someone EXPECT a tip. It should be something offered up for great service and not expected as part of their job.

I agree.

I'm a good tipper.

The surest way to NOT get a tip from me is to ask for one.

This is not an exhaustive list since I don't necessarily use/need all the professions listed above.

I tip:
- hair stylist
- server
- tour guide
- cab driver

I do not tip:
- Starbuck's employees
- any other "jar" type situation

Barber, food server, taxi driver, bell hop, massage therapist (no happy ending required)and a few others in the service industry.

I won't put money in a tip jar like most of you. I also won't tip a homeless musician on the street. If they are that good go get a gig somewhere at a local tavern.

Servers at restaurants, even if they suck they get a minimum 15%.

Sonic car hops, tho I've never figured out if you should or not, more if they are actually rollerskating.

Pizza delivery peoples.

Hair people.

I have tipped at Starbucks, but thats cuz I know her and she always had my order ready.

Bartenders.

Thats pretty much it. I dont typically go anywhere with doormen, I've been in a taxi all of 3 times my entire life, and well, I carry my own crap around too, I dont need to pay someone to do it.

Oh, and the preacher dude for the wedding ceremony.

Most of what was already mentioned...

Though, I do tip in the jar at Thundercloud Subs - they rule and are very "Keep Austin Weird" and worth every tip they are given.

I like to random tip - for those people that work their ass off and don't work a job that is typical of tipping. Getting my car detailed - if they pay attention and actually detail the vehicle rather than just clean it [there is a difference] they will receive a nice tip.

Servers in bars and restaurants

Bellman at hotels

Barber

Baggage handlers at airport IF I use the SkyCap.

Pizza delivery people

Shoeshine guy when I've used one which is few and far between...I usually shine my own.

Staff at the local automated carwash when and if I use them

I don't usually if ever tip when I see a tip jar like at a sub shop or something like that.

I don't tip attendants in men's restrooms.

I'm sure there are more that I tip that I'm just not thinking of and I'm sure there's others that I don't tip as well.

Will definitely get a tip unless service is unacceptable:

Wait staff
Bartender
Delivery guys (food, furniture, etc)
Valets
Cabbies
Hairstylist
Bellmen

May get a tip depending on situation:

Tour Guides
Car washers / detailers

I won’t tip at the local sandwich shop, lunch place, etc. for some kid to do their job behind a counter. The tip jars bother me.

I’m sure there are others but theses are what I first thought of.
