Question AmEx Platinum v. Blue

A question to those of you carrying an AmEx platium card (green, gold, or platinum for that matter, since they all have an annual fee).

I've carried the blue card for a couple years now. Last year my cash rebate was over $700 at the end of the year, and I get many of the same benefits provided by the charge cards. AmEx keeps sending pre-approvals, first year's fee waived for their platinum cards and every time I call about my account they give me the sales pitch.

I've yet to see the benefit - I'd rather get PAID $700+ to use a card than pay them $150-350. For those carrying one of their cards with the annual fee, what do you get (that you actually use) for the added cost?

I have 3. A Entertainment gold for Concert pre-sales. A Blue for rewards and a Platinum tied to Hilton Honors.

I use them as my wants dictate.

I'm in the same boat you are Dan.

I haven't taken any of the offers because I'd rather get paid money and buy my own plane ticket to where I want instead of dealing with miles, any restrictions, monthly fees, etc.

But maybe Sean can help because he's got the Gold Amex... not the black, but the Gold. Haha.

I have the Gold and the Blue. Had the gold for 4 years before they sent me the offer of the blue, I took it since there's no annual fee, and the annual fee for the gold is only $50 or 60

Seems like that should be clue enough that you're better off with the Blue They want to up-sell you to a more profitable product.

Lately they've been bugging me about a "plum" card, of all the goddamn things ... for my non-existent business, naturally. Plum??? I mean, they're sending them to my wife as well, so they should know I'm not gay... wtf?

The Plat card get's you access to a couple Airlines Presidents Club. For a while my Co would pay for a club if you traveled a lot, I got them to put that towards my Plat fee.

I have the blue... its ok but I rarely ever use it...

MC/Visa = easy to use
Discover = less easy
Amex Blue = more suck for use

Not a bad idea... that'd definitely be nice for the long layovers on international flights. What does the membership typically run?

I've found it has a lot to do with location. In FL I don't think any merchant declined my AmEx, in NC it happens from time-to-time, and in West Virginia they look at me like I'm a leper when I hand it to them. Even the grocery stores up there won't accept it.
