Cool Hello Winter: wrench to bike - Ultra Edition

Well it's been a month since I put the bikes up. They got a good bath, wax, and oil change.

I have some mods planned for both the bikes.

Nightster Edition here

On the docket for the Ultra

Saddlebag latch inserts

cause I hate reflectors

Pop them off

Clean the latch up

Stick on the billet inserts

Much nicer

Also added this nice tray in the saddlebag. Will be nice for my sunglasses, camera, whatever I don't want rattling around in the bag.

Maintenance items: (both really easy)
Front brake pad replacement (2 bolts & 1 pin per caliper)
Front fork oil replacement (drain plug R&R, remove dash piece to fill)

Gloss black powder:
saddlebag surrounds
horn cover
tank dash
air cleaner cover
starter cover
rear fender struts
license plate brackets

Flat black high temp powder (the powder will be more durable than ceramic, flat cause gloss will loose its shine over time & miles):
heat shields
mufflers

ceramic (gray-color doesn't matter) the exhaust pipes for an added heat barrier

This has always been the only read cosmetic mods I ever thought of for the last 2 years of ownership. Always said I might do this one day...

So I started into the bike...

All of this chrome needs to go (saddle bag surrounds, rear fender struts, plate bracket, mufflers)

Off with the parts

remove the horn cover

tank dash gone

exhaust heat shields and air cleaner cover off

Exhaust pipes off

After also doing the nightster I had allot of parts off... YIKES this is going to get expensive!

Not much to report on the Ultra.

The LED I bought from HD 2 years ago never was all that good.

So I bought 2 things to try from my friends at www.superbrightleds.com

This neat little thing that comes with all the different connectors.

But it ended up just looking like this square group of LEDs.

So I decided to go with the other option. A 360* high powered led jobber

So here's the HD

The superbright hotness

The superbright version lights the entire lens (regardless of the pic), where as the HD one is like little LED dots.

I picked up a bunch of powder which has gavin me a proper excited state. I just need to find time to mount it up.

This really should have been posted last week, but was busy with my buds wedding and doing best man stuff for that. But...

Got some stuff back from powder.

Detail cleaned that stuff, and light wax job on it.

New air cleaner ring installed on the cover

Installed and even with the chrome center nut it keeps the mix of chrome/black

Starter cover done black. Never understood why they chromed (to bring attention to it) such a pointless cover.

Put the center back in the tank dash. This is going to be a great chrome/black highlight piece as you'll see.

Chrome gas cap cover with the black willie g skull... I think it looks great.

Plus the black right against the black pearl (gray) paint.

Waiting on some key parts to get the saddle bags back on and the ceramic stuff done on the pipes. Stay tuned...

I hope I never ride near enough to you to be blinded by the sun reflecting off your bike

But I'm getting rid of chrome... so that should make it better.

Got the horn done... here's the pieces

And it does like I have been trying to do... disappearing act

Can't put the saddlebags back together, cause one of the tubes had to be re-done... but got the fenderstruts and trunk detach kit pieces done.

Keeping with the blend of black & chrome... the plate frame is still chrome with black print

Finally have all the pieces to put the saddlebag surrounds back on.

Tap out the threaded holes so they are clean

Get it together

Got two of each of these shots below (with & without flash) neither is exactly how it looks in person.

With the saddle bag

Duplicate on other side

I love it...

This exhaust bracket was bare metal from HD, and you could see it. I fixed that, high temp powder and a new chrome bolt to replace the rusted old one.

Then I borrowed a 1 3/8" wrench from a tech at work... to remove the fork caps. Then remove the drain plugs and let the forks drain.

Should pick up the ceramic this weekend so I can get the exhaust back on. Got all the high temp powder sitting in the basement just waiting.
