as long as you are not saving the file or accessing something on the drive... your fine... I never safely remove any usb items... never had a problem... and I work in IT...err did till about 12hrs ago

I just wait till I shut the laptop off then remove it. I've lost stuff just by yanking it out.

If you are copying files from it, yank whenever you want.
If you are copying files TO it, stop it first. I've been too eager to remove it and lost files before. Just like Rsv1000R said, if you're going to pull out without stopping, don't store anything you can't afford to lose.
